Zero prrogres vs last season?
« on: Sunday 07-Oct-2018, 00:25* »
As much as I was depressed by JK’s laser season and encouraged by the spirit shown this season, the harsh facts on paper are no progress when you look at the same fixtures (using Bristol and LI as equivalent games.

Actually lost more games (4/6) but more bonus points to have same total:

17/18  vs 18/19
39-29 LI a 1pt vs Bristol 23-20 1pt
30-22 Saints a 0pts vs 25-18 1pt
42-26 Sale h 5pts vs 51-24 5pts
20-5 Bath h 4 pts vs 31-37 2pts
37-9 Glos a 0pts vs 25-27 4pts
20-25 Sarries 20-19 4pts vs 20-25 1pt

Season to date
17/18 w3/l3 14 pts (pts diff-5pts) vs 18/19 w2/l4 14pts (pts diff+8pts)

Interesting comparison. Last season's problems came home to roost in the disastrous second half of the season. The first few months were, ostensibly, pretty good.

The  positive feeling, currently, is such a plus and should carry the boys through to May. That might sound wishy-washy but it is the intangible difference from the last campaign. The fight and determination is there, even if the results aren't.

That said, still gutted that we lost at home to Barf!

There is massive progress from last season.  The whole feel of things has changed for me.  I understand it but I m not sure comparing results to last season matter that much, teams change for example.  This is a different side.  The game yesterday, I think last seasons side would have shipped a fair few points (and likewise in a few other games this season).  Million miles away from last years team.  Cut the penalties and dodgy LO out and we will be flying I think.

Yes, progress has certainly been made. Didn’t get the result last night and I was dead frustrated for the last ten minutes and at the end but in the cold light of day we gave the top team in the league a serious working over and had chances to win the game. Not sure how instructive comparing this season’s like for like results with last is in terms of measuring progress, different teams will have progressed at different rates and games will be played under different conditions.

As I and others have said from the start, avoiding relegation and clearly starting to build something new and better are the aims this year.

And this year is absolutely nothing like last season in terms of the way we’re playing and the way the team is working.

I’m watching an improving team with heart and what’s turning into a very good defence.

Last year they didn’t care and didn’t have a clue.

I guess this is a classic case of trying to compare the tangible with the intangible. From a statistical view point we appear no better or worst than last season but on gut feel we are. Well, FWIW I'm going with my gut at the moment ;-)

Statistics do lie - huge difference between this year and last year. The only match the boys played like last night was the Sarries match, but we have really looked up for it in all matches this season and the win on the road last week was excellent

100% agree on this. Picking up 6 bonus points despite the defeats is a clear indication of fighting spirit and I think Gustard’s influence is becoming increasingly apparent.

For now, I think he’s focusing on making us hard to beat which I think is the best strategy with the squad we currently have.

We are the only team so far this season who have actually given Saracens a game, and it took bringing in four fresh internationals off the bench for them to beat us, and bat us narrowly. That's progress.

A real difference for us this year is the fact that we're picking up bonus points regularly. Last year we only got 8 bonus points in total all season (5 tbp, 3 lbp). So far this season we're already on 6 bonus points (2 tbp, 4 lbp). Where we would capitulate in tough games & let the score run away from us last season, this year we're dogging it out in every game.

Look at the table now (yes I know there's still a game to play in this round, but it's still informative)

We have the 4th best points difference (one of 5 teams to have a positive pd)
We're 4th in tries for vs tries against (only 4 teams have a positive difference)
We're second best in tries against (only Exeter have had fewer tries scored against them so far)
We've the highest bonus points of the whole table.

Those are all things last year where we were decidedly in the lower half of the league (10th on points difference, equal 10th on tries for v tries against, 10th on number of tries against, and equal 10th on bonus points). We're not going to suddenly win the premiership this year (I think!) but there's definite signs that Gussie's plans are gradually coming to fruition. We're becoming more of a tough team to score tries against. We're the only team so far this season to have stopped Sarries from getting a try bonus point so far, whereas teams like Gloucester, Newcastle, & Bath (all tipped to be way ahead of us in the table) all shipped 4 tries to them. That's the first few steps on a way to getting back to where we should be with our squad, which is in the top 6 pushing for a play-off place in a year or two's time.

Last season we squeaked past Saracens, who went on a five game losing streak around the AI,s into Christmas..... this season we competed against a much better team.....
And there is the rub.....if you accept teams get better (and worse) then comparing results year on year is a waste of time.

The team is not going to go from last season to world beaters in 12 weeks...but are they laying a foundation to build upon? Hopefully. Do we know? No!

Can we hope? Yes!

Oh and  if you want to compare Stats, how about the only team to have let in less tries than Quins this season is Exeter....

I count that as improvement.....

So much improvement in performance and spirit.

Last year the second half of the season was the true showing of this team. I always felt that they were flattered in the first half of the season, being generally poor but a couple of miracle results/performances (win away at Wasps and the Sarries win).

This year (to me at least) feels a lot different and there is really something to build on. The results will come.
