The soaring salaries were never sustainable with or without RFU belt tightening. The fact very few of the clubs were making any real money in recent times illustrates this!

I'm fairly sure I read somewhere that they were also making sa lot of the roles created for 2015 RWC redundant, which makes sense

I dont take anything the Daily Mail say seriously. The want to knock everything and everyone. They have been taking shots at the east stand refurbishment and RFUs desire to bring hospitality in house.

The England women rugby union team’s second-place finish behind New Zealand in the 2017 World Cup has been cited as the key reason why the RFU’s professional rugby investment target was £700,000 in arrears.
Group finance director Richard Daniel revealed at the last RFU Council meeting that the bonuses paid for their performance had somehow been ‘unbudgeted’ despite the England women being defending champions.

It's apparetnly now cost £80m on a £50m budget, I'd say that would have a pretty big impact!
Not saying it isn't true, Rocker, but can you point me to more information? I seem to have missed this entirely (was listening to Flamenco and drinking cava when the story broke).

Utterly appalling mess that the RFU are now having to make 62 redundancies that have come about as a result of the reckless spending on management salaries (Eddie Jones) and even the amount England players are paid to represent England (£20,000 a game).
I presume you're joking, as it's the miscalculation of the cost of the refurbed east stand that has seen them tighten their belts. Also, that article seems a bit behind the times, because as far as I know the redundancies have been implemented already, and at least one of my friends is already out on her ear.
QP, while I'm sure you're right that Eddie's salary and players' match fees aren't breaking the bank, how do you know that cost overruns on the east stand redevelopment are to blame?

Not with the celery cap in place, no. However, imagine B Craig unfettered by the cap & willing to spend double or even triple to key players. Given how short a playing career is, it's hard to imagine many turning down the lure of inflated salaries like that. Alternatively, he could decide instead to have a squad that's a lot larger, hovering up talent from overseas/other Prem sides/etc meaning his players play less (but for the same money), have longer recovery times etc. We only have to look at Roundball to see how (with the occasional exception of the likes of Leicester City in 2015/16) the top spots are basically the same clubs (the richest ones) year after year.

This is why the Celery Cap is still needed. Without that in place, you'd find the teams that rely more on the PGA fees will struggle to attract players, while those backed by one or two wealthy owners (Bath are a prime example) simply spending their way to gain titles.
