I think Healey is all about Healey. He pretends to be self deprecating but he really is not. What he says is usually about making what he says seem important.

I totally agree with BQ.  To add to that, there was no complaints from any Wasps regards to a spit at a player. Also, I would guess that all of those totally offended on social media, a fair few prob had not even seen the incident but took the word of others as gospel and jumped on the bandwagon.

So, is the footage faked, then? He's not been cited so no case to answer but you can't just blame Healey for it. Forget it and move on but don't pretend things you don't like didn't happen.

In order - no clearly it's not faked and I didn't suggest it was. I'm not blaming Healey for the incident, I'm pointing out that BT didn't do its usual rounded assessment of controversial incidents, I have moved on because it's a game of rugby and really doesn't bother me in the slightest, and finally - yes spit came out of his mouth, but as we've constantly discussed, literally no one on the field or any official or any subsequent official says that it was Ward spitting at someone. So I'm not sure what I'm pretending didn't happen. As before, you can't caution someone for spitting during a rugby match or you'd have no one left on the field.

The entire story happened because as the replay of the treading incident was played for the first time, Healey says in commentary that he spat. None of his co-commentary team responded to it at the time and as we know, no official either during or after the match regarded it as being an incident (eg him spitting at someone). But it's not the "did he or didn't he" that I was raising, it was exactly the point about how it unfolded as a "scandal". Nor am I suggesting Healey did it maliciously etc etc.

(My point about the reputation of his personality is entirely coincidental with the observation)

Ward has always seemed like a bit of a chippy so-and-so to be frank and a one-game ban for his idiocy seems mild, but my point was entirely about what one piece of video proves, as was quite clear.

That's the whole point of video replays and angles -- and the BT commentary team, Healey in particular, spend lots of time telling us how everything looks worse in slow motion and that certain hits aren't as bad as they look and that other angles show arms weren't around necks, or were etc...

All that usual objectivity and understanding of what you can and can't deduce from a single video camera angle coincidentally vanished (I'm not claiming any grand conspiracy, simply that it didn't happen) and then the social media furore erupted.

My entire point throughout this has simply been that whether he spat at someone or not - you can't prove it with the single piece of video that's been used to "show" it. BT normally would have made exactly that point -- and they regularly apologise to officials during games in commentary, for example, where they've disagreed with the call and then watched video and realised that the ref got it right or whatever.

You'd normally have expected someone to say "well the officials haven't made any reference to spitting blah blah" during the commentary which may well have taken some of the heat of the whole silly saga.

So yes, I've moved on cheers, the reason I posted was because Jammy was making exactly the same point about what he said about the neck roll. He made an instant decision on not enough visual information. It's unlike BT not to have given it some more perspective or to have caveated the judgement.

It was that tedious narcissist Healey who started the whole Ward thing. He saw the slo-mo and immediately said he’d spat even though no mention from anyone and no one else in commentary team corrected him or said “no one has mentioned spitting, ref just calling the treading on foot”.

As soon as the words passed his lips the “story” started.

It wasn't a neck roll.

I know Austin thought it was, but the other angle showed clearly it was under the armpits, not around the neck (I thought it was a neck roll at first and so was paying attention, unlike Oz)

Has the deadline for citings now passed? I assume it has, but am surprised that the citing person hasn't even mentioned the incident or the tackle on Brown. Sometimes for high profile incidents the commissioner comes out and says that someone only merited a yellow card, so no ban, but I guess if neither incident was worthy of a red (which neither were in my opinion) then perhaps no reason to say anything at all.

Just a bit of spittle when he called him something beginning with P , the tread on his foot was a bit of a cheap shot but not intended to hurt , just to wind up - mission accomplished there .. that's going on all the time as the forwards irritate each other -

Storm in a teacup , stirred by ex Waspies with agenda 's .. they will never accept that and double down on the fact that it was spit and a stamp .

All a bit unsavoury , but in the midst of it on Sat eve I saw something on facebook or twitter that made me smile

Paraphrasing" not sure what the problem is , even if Wardy was trying to spit at Youngs I doubt he'd hit him - probably went straight over his head or to one side "

So it wasn't deemed worthy of further action? Sounds like the kind of thing that happens in games. Apart from in the mind of Mr Goode of course.

I'm not sure. Someone sent me a screenshot of the allegation on Whatsapp, but I've deleted it now. I think at the time the ref and assistants didnt see anything and so couldn't do anything, and maybe they didn't have enough camera angles for a citing. Not sure how Goode knows that Ward was intentionally trying to break his leg as opposed to just a very reckless tackle. It's a bit like when players try to tackle a fly half's standing leg when they're kicking - it always looks nasty, but hard to say it's a deliberate attempt to break a leg as opposed to just roughing them up a bit.

I was not aware of the incident and allegation until this blew up, so no idea if Ward was very much in the wrong, or Goode is just holding a grudge over a bad tackle and his suspsicion of malicious intent. Either way, given how long ago it was, it seems odd to still be so angry about it that he'd go this overboard

But not something as serious as an alleged intended arm break. I can't say I'd heard anything about it before. Normally such allegations are loudly made and instantly picked up on by those who repeat them.

He said Ward tried to break his arn in a match years ago, he remembers that but not when he went he got sent off for a high tackle with swinging arm to the head whilst playing against Leicester for Worcester. He seems to have lost the plot.

Reading some of the comments on other boards you have to wonder if they have ever watched a match, I think the Worcester one about Brown being cited is the best.

Actually after reading the Exeter link I have changed my mind, the comment about Robshaw harassing the ref is the best.

We are the most arrogant club in the premiership apparently and our players constantly harass the ref. While I believe that players in general need to adjust their attitude to the officials, it is by no means only a quins problem.

I do find there is a tendency amongst a subset of rugby fans to claim the moral high ground and adopt a holier than thou attitude wherever the oppprtunity presents itself. Then again, could well just be the internet.

Don’t believe for a second that that amount of saliva comes out of Ward’s mouth just naturally through talking, but seems there was no clear evidence that he deliberately spat directly on the player, so we’re free to get on with our lives.

Demands for apologies from random pundits, who haven’t strictly speaking even been proven wrong about this, seem like a bit of a waste of time to me.  Not a fan of Goode at all, but equally couldn’t care less whether he feels sorry about it.

And because of the actions of the club we can now point out that we've addressed what was a non-incident (spitting) and increased the punishment for the infringement that the ref had already dealt with. A question later was about the Brown tackle in the air and why no card etc, and guess what Goode said “ Yep the ref got that right”

Also, he’s a rubbish hooker. Great round the pitch but his throwing a abysmal. We really need a top class hooker

Yellow, not red. The only time I can remember a player being red carded for words to the ref was Hartley when he called Barnes an effing cheat. As it happens, Marler didn't even get penalised, so probably nothing too much to worry about there.

Fine. If it was dealt with correctly at the time why have the club punished him?

At a guess, I'd say it's to teach him a lesson and to send a warning to others. It also shows that we are getting our house in order and won't tolerate foul play; better to address it immediately than to wait for possible citing and (maybe) get away with it if there is none. It won't do the club's reputation any harm, and if it sets a precedent that's a good thing IMO. Self-policing was very evident in the days pre TV cameras...

Because it was dirty and really stupid.

On the spit thing: Again, he clearly spits. But there's no evidence of where he spits, no sign of him aiming, no sign of who it hits, and no complaints from Wasps. What exactly do people want here? Ward - who I think is a liability, for the record - to be tried and convicted because BT want us to believe that it was deliberate on the back of no evidence?

Andy Goode has already completed a thorough online investigation and found him guilty by opinion. Nick Abendanon did say in reply that yes he did spit like most players but did say there is no proof it was aimed at anyone.

That wasn’t the issue. I was answering “it’s a stamp because treading isn’t an offence”.

Which isn’t true according to the match officials.

The club have presumably punished him because it’s a humiliatingly awful thing to have done and damaged our reputation on the day that should have been about a discord HQ crowd.

But it could also be for laughs.

Either way the slow mo clip everyone bangs on about proves nothing whether you think he did it or not.

It’s one angle and you can’t tell where he is in relation to the player or anything - which everyone at BT knows well.

Fine. If it was dealt with correctly at the time why have the club punished him?

Because it was dirty and really stupid.

On the spit thing: Again, he clearly spits. But there's no evidence of where he spits, no sign of him aiming, no sign of who it hits, and no complaints from Wasps. What exactly do people want here? Ward - who I think is a liability, for the record - to be tried and convicted because BT want us to believe that it was deliberate on the back of no evidence?

Yeah? Since when has any club done that?

The referee specifically says: “There’s no force. It’s a yellow card. Happy with a yellow card John (TMO)? It’s a deliberate action to walk and step on the player’s ankle, there’s no force, but it is the cause of the whole incident.”

Then to Ward: “You caused the whole thing by stepping on his ankle, off you go.”

So that’s the offence.

Fine. If it was dealt with correctly at the time why have the club punished him?

I’ve just rewatched a slo mo clip of the incident on Twitter.
I’m quite worried that it does seem that he collects spit before releasing it from his mouth as you would do if it was intentional. Originally I thought it was just a accidental spray, but I think this may actually be cited as much as I hope it isn’t...

Here’s the link to the clip let me know what you think? I’ve watched it over and over

Ward just dribbled. It wasnt a stamp, just pressed down with his foot. Yellow right decision. Move on

I think the club have dealt with this very well.

In the old days of rugby, you’d get a good clip round the ear hole by the opposition for that type of behaviour but you can’t do that anymore so a one game ban is a fair outcome. Whether it was a stamp, tread or whatever, I’d hope we’d all agree that has no place on a rugby pitch.

Well done also to Ward for coming out to apologise - we’ve all done stupid things in the heat of the moment but it’s a strong man who accepts he was in the wrong and apologises.

Hopefully case now closed!

Unfortunately with this situation the club is damned if they do damned if they don't as Ward through some personal agenda reporting about it has him a guilty, it doesn't matter what the outcome of any citing if there is one as to them he did it no matter what happens. Some of the abuse to Marler from the 3 year or however long they have been in Coventry Wasps supporters is appalling.

Except 'treading' isn't an offence. It's either stamping or trampling. So why punish him?

I’ve just watched it real time for the first time on tv.

He calls him a prick - that’s the “spit”. I genuinely thought he’d spat when I saw the super slow mo angle that Goode has put out.

It all comes from Healey immediately saying he spat.

I’m not a one eyed Quins fan. But can totally see why now it’s impossible to claim otherwise.

The Club have issued a statement. (https://www.quins.london/news/club-statement-dave-ward/)

CLUB STATEMENT: DAVE WARD
Sunday, 30th December 2018 @ 12:00

FOLLOWING THE PREMIERSHIP MATCH BETWEEN HARLEQUINS AND WASPS AT TWICKENHAM ON 29TH DECEMBER THE CLUB HAS REVIEWED AN INCIDENT INVOLVING DAVE WARD AND THOMAS YOUNG IN THE 10TH MINUTE, WHICH LED TO A YELLOW CARD FOR WARD.

Following this review the Club has decided to give Dave Ward a one game suspension for treading on Thomas Young's ankle.

Harlequins Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: "We have reviewed this episode as a club and I have spoken with Dave.

"We do not coach, condone or accept foul play and on behalf of the team and the Club, I apologise to Thomas, Dai and Wasps for this incident. It was an unnecessary and regrettable incident in what was a tightly contested match at Twickenham."

The Club also reviewed an alleged spitting incident involving Dave Ward and are satisfied that there is no case to answer.

Ward said: "I apologise unreservedly to Thomas Young, Wasps and everyone at Harlequins for my yellow card yesterday.

"I would also like to make clear that I did not spit on another player during the match yesterday. Regardless of what the television footage looks like I know that I have never spat on a player in all my career and will never do so."

Oh and to call that a stamp is ridiculous! Didn't see the spit, other than some stills which don't show any direction or landing of the phlegm. Just it leaving his mouth, while shouting?

Of course Mr foode is a Wasps cheer leader,  a certain dayglo (who really shouldn't do commentary on Wasps games) unlikely to mention anything about that. Or the white into Joe Marlers face from a certain CM previously of this parish

Neck roll is dangerous but to call it inexcusable is just silly overreaction. Dangerous and illegal play and will be dealt with as it is for all players. Hardly despicable behaviour.

Treading on his ankle is unpleasant and potentially dangerous. Silly niggle, deserved yellow. If people think that's a stamp then they're entitled to their opinion, but they must stamp everywhere they go.

As for the spit, I think it's very questionable. Don't see from the video how you could say either way. If he did intentionally spit then that's foul and inexcusable.

Andy Goode's twitter attack is also inexcusable. He's said before he doesn't like ward. He's s joke and I'd hope marler would steer clear of their pod

Real shame the Club works so hard to get 80,000 and the headlines in the press all about Dave Ward.

I agree to an extent. It does seem as though there’s a real intention to drive controversy in rugby these days from journos and broadcasters. I think Dave’s stepping on Young’s foot was stupid and that reading between the lines he’ll get a severe ear bending from PG but I think the way the disciplinary process is being driven by the media is a cause for concern.

Title: Re: Dave Ward

The stamp was a nasty and petty move. Gustard has said that Ward will be spoken to. The spit doesn't look deliberate to me (a la Rijkaard on Voller in 1990!) However, I am sure that Wardy will be encouraged to be honest and confess if he did do it deliberately.

Just watching the game again with a cup of tea. Have to say how proud I am of our boys. So much petty shirt pulling, grabbing and holding off the ball from Wasps. Not a likeable team, by any stretch of the imagination!

Disappointed to see this behaviour from someone who’s been a solid part of our club for years.
The spit is questionable, I don’t think it was aimed or maliciously directed towards anyone but the neck roll and stamp/trample is inexcusable and unfortunately deserves a ban. The neck roll, you see him lock his arms together like a head lock, knowing exactly what he was doing. And well the stamp, speaks for itself. Such a shame for what was a delightful result otherwise!

If true poor from ward. Definite light step on ankle and earlier neck roll. Spit questionable. Unlikely for a decent bloke.

Thanks Scamble.

Not sure that is a “natural” action for me (in terms of the potential spit). Combined with the stamp, I’d like to see the club come out and ban him early for this (I’m sure others will disagree).

At least one (maybe two) pretty disgraceful actions. To me this is very different to punching someone face to face which should be a yellow. This is much, much worse and either action has no place in the game. Hopefully he’s at least strong enough to come out and accept he’s made 1/2 errors and accept whatever punishment is given.

Stamp doesn’t deserve any further sanction. Was a moronic thing to do but a yellow was the right decision.

Just back from the game. Didn’t see the incident at the time but looks like a very petulant stamp. Not going to cause much damage but not good full stop against a defenceless player. Deserves a 4-6 week ban for me.

If he’s found guilty of spitting then he should be banned for the season (I didn’t see that personally). No place in rugby for spitting at another human being.
