Title: 9th Signing - Tom Lawday
Post by: WellingQuin on Thursday 21-Mar-2019, 12:00*
NUMBER EIGHT JOINS THE CLUB FROM EXETER CHIEFS FOR 2019/20 SEASON

Harlequins can confirm that Tom Lawday will join the Club for the 2019/20 season.

The powerful Number eight, who is currently with Exeter Chiefs, is a former BUCS player of the season and has represented England Students.

Lawday, who capped his final year at the University of Exeter with that BUCS award and as top try-scorer in BUCS Super Rugby in 2016/17, joined the Chiefs that summer.

He made his Chiefs debut against Quins at the Stoop in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in the 2017/18 season and scored a try for them a week later against Cardiff Blues.

The 25-year-old said: I have been really impressed with what has been going on at Harlequins this season and know it is a club with very strong ambitions. I am looking forward to playing at The Stoop for Gussy and this team and know that a lot of success lies ahead there.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: Tom is a very impressive Number eight and we are excited that he has committed his future with us.

He is a strong, ball-carrying, tackle-breaking, all-action back row who I believe will continue to improve individually and help us improve collectively as a team. He is an impressive young man who is the archetypal modern-day back row forward.

I have watched him play a lot this season and, in every game, there have been signs of real quality and ability to be special and make a difference. We really like what we have seen in terms of his on-field strengths and in meeting him we are very happy that he exhibits the kind of behaviours that we look for.

I am sure he will be very well received by our wonderful supporters and we are delighted he will be playing in the quarters next season.

Welcome Tom. Another I don't know much about but look forward to seeing. Can't see Bothma's contract being renewed now, but who knows

Assuming that means one star - otherwise my commiserations. Not sure its that underwhelming, he performed well in place of Simmonds and we can offload Bothma and Wallace.

I think Lawday is a cracking player.  Seen him for Exeter before we were linked and thought he looked really good. Happy with this.  Re Bothma, Id like him to stay, but if he did go I would not be devastated.  Our BR looks very good.  I would say more likely, Wallace and Luamanu out, Evans and Lawday in.

I see him replacing Luamanu, with Evans replacing Wallace and probably also Kunatani. Am I wrong in thinking Bothma is still in contract next season?

Bothma is frequently injured or banned and has dreadful hands. Not sure his one or two decent carries per season are really worth the expense.

He's behind Dombrandt, Clifford and Chisholm. I suspect he's on a fair amount of cash.

Not saying I think he should definitely go, just not much of a loss if he does

Your one word review is certainly underwhelming.

Exeter boss Rob Baxter says the club could not keep Tom Lawday and abide by the salary cap, after Harlequins announced they had signed the forward.

The 25-year-old back row has impressed in his first season with the first team after coming through Chiefs' academy after attending university in the city.

He is the second player Exeter have reluctantly let go to keep under the 7m cap following Santiago Cordero.

"You just can't keep everybody, it's just not possible," Baxter said.

"The days of every player who wanted to stay stays at Exeter - they're gone when you talk about salary caps and successful teams," the Exeter boss added to BBC Sport.

Exeter will bring in British and Irish Lions full-back Stuart Hogg after the World Cup and already have experienced internationals such as Alex Cuthbert, Dave Dennis and a number of players in the England squad.

"It's a tough scenario but one you've got to get the balance of," Baxter added.

"Would I have liked Tom to stay? Of course I would, he's come through and played some important games for us.

"Is it possible for him to stay and Dave Dennis to stay and Stuart Hogg to come in and to have Henry Slade, Jack Nowell, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Sam Skinner, Jonny Hill, Matt Kvesic, Nic White, and Ollie Devoto to be here? At some stage you've got to make decisions and that's where we are."

Yeah but don't forget Rob Baxter and Gustard's views are wrong.

He's underwhelming.

My one word review underwhelming

This has looked increasingly like an ill informed comment all week.

BT spent half the build up today talking about how it showed Chiefs were now having to balance around the salary cap and let players go theyd ideally like to keep. Baxter said again he wished he could keep him and sang his praises as did all the BT team.

But wed rather have Bothma? Not me.

I don't see how anyone who's watched Lawday play this season could describe his signing as underwhelming.
