Title: Is James Lang, Quins best ever back up 10
Post by: West Stand Quin on Thursday 13-Jun-2019, 10:57*
I can think of

Botica for Evans
Clegg for Evans
Malone for Evans
Dunne for Burke
Jarvis for Burke
Arwel Thomas for Staunton
Challinor for Pears
Not sure who was Lacroix’s back up

I’m  there’s others I’ve missed

Did Grimoldby ever get to back up status?  Can't remember.

Andy Dunne to Paul Burke?

Johnny Schuster to Lacroix (although JS played more at Centre to be fair)

I always wanted to see more of Ben Urdapilleta.  I thought he looked useful. Done well since leaving us.

That’s a pretty average set of 10s to be fair - no wonder NeV will be remembered (correctly) as a significant step forward!

NEV limited our recruitment options as anyone coming in pretty much knew they would be an understudy.

Presently playing FH for D2 for Club Massy, Paris.

Indeed, and even as an understudy they'd only get a start if NEv were injured badly enough that he couldn't play at all, which limited their development. I'm not saying they would all have gone on to be internationals, but Clegg, Urdapilleta, Botica and Swiel were all players who could have improved in ability while with us, but were stuck with just bit roles...

Smith for Evans wasn't bad (2017/18) Or Evans for Smith depending how one saw it.

Pretty sure Evans was retired by then

There was a little cross over you’ve also forgotten Jackson

Luvenyali?

Botica was a decent player just had a couple of very major brain farts. Then again we did something similar against Saints this yeah, though not as glaringly bad.

Urdapilleta was ok but I think was too much of a utlity player for us so never got a chance to show what he could do as a proper back up.

Swiel was similar. Never really got a proper run at 10, seemed more of a utility sub.

Clegg was decent but not good enough really to be a prem starter. CoS trusted him to close out the final though.

I think Grimoldby has left Massy now but can't remember where he's gone

Jackson was pretty uninspiring

End of Smith’s first season according to Wiki

May 2018 was the end of Smith's first season; Evans had been retired for a year by that time.

Botica has also fared pretty well in France.

I seem to be in a minority, but I really liked Paul Challinor.

Smith for Evans - even in his first season - was clearly the closest in talent.

Smith / Lang might ultimately be the more talented combination once they are both more experienced. It's improbable that Smith will ever be quite as good as Evans (though he is already a damn sight closer than we have any right to expect [1]), but of our long term backups Malone was probably the best and I think Lang is likely to mature into being a better player than him.

Had we caught Arwel Thomas at his peak, it might have been a different story, though...

----
[1] I thought we would struggle for a long time to replace Evans, Easter and Lowe, but in Smith, Dombrandt and Marchant we have come far closer than I expected. Now, where do we find the next Robshaws?

James Chisholm to come back from injury (as did Robshaw) and duplicate history...

Poorfour, Smith was never back-up to Evans!

You’re right. I misread wiki that Nev had retired in May 2018.

My bad

On paper surely Catrakilis was our best back-up 10 (or back-up back-up 10, as even when fit he appeared behind Lang as well as Smith). Admittedly he never got to show us much of his pre-Quins form, but clearly still rated given his move back to SA.

I think he was very good. He was also a very good place-kicker. Except during the game.

Schuster and Lacroix are the ones that spring to mind.
Pretty sure Schuster was understudy at one point..

Was genuinely hoping that the answer to that question would have been Smith 2019/2020!
