Title: The walk of shame
Post by: Everyone’s a Quinner on Wednesday 29-Aug-2018, 00:35*
Out of interest, does anyone recall recently if we still play over the tannoy “So Long Farewell” if anyone gets sin binned? Bit of a random thing to ask but can’t remeber hearing it for a while and hope we still play it, always gives me a jestful chuckle

Wasn't played on Friday. But then the announcer had seemingly forgotten his team sheet, so i wasn't expecting him to know where all the sound FX buttons are.

I really enjoyed the days when they played "These Boots Are Made For Walking".

They stopped playing tha music at least 6 years ago.

I enjoyed it too but apparently the Quins players didn't like it and thought it to be disrespectful.

Was the PA guy on Friday the same one we had last season?

Yeah he was -- bloke called Mike Bovill -- guess it was a warm up game for him too. I thought he was very good last year to be fair.

Mike Bovill was excellent. His predecessor (Nick Heath) was excellent too. The one before that wasn't so good - didn't seem to "get" rugby

They stopped playing it quite some time ago. I could never decide whether I thought it was amusing or a bit cringeworthy / disrespectful. The problem with those things is that if you end up losing, you look pretty silly playing mocking music, and if you're winning, it just looks a bit like gloating / being disrespectful to a beaten opposition. I know it's just meant to be a bit of fun, but as we moan about the Sarries music and the fat lady thing, I think it's just as well we dropped it really.

Also, in recent games it's been our players heading off to the bin more than the opposition.

I swear I’ve stopped hearing it more recently around the 14/15 season. I understand the whole disrespect thing in rugby to which I would also never want to disrespect an opponent, but I felt it was more rugby-esque banter and something to perk the fans up with a pinch of jestful humour if not anything else. I wouldn’t go as far as disrespectful though but then again if that’s the majority of vibe from the recieving end then I guess that’s maybe why it’s stopped then

It died out with Mad Max if I remember rightly? Probably right it was canned to be honest.

I used to enjoy it. And playing "give peace a chance" when scuffles broke out with the forwards. Bit of harmless entertainment.

It was Nad Max that did it they haven’t done it since he left I thought it was a bit of harmkess fun and anyone who thought it disrespectful needs to go and have a strong word with themselves

It was harmless fun, and "give peace a chance" was inspired. We need more things that make us chuckle rather than tut over whether it might be offending someone else.

Appalling that you think it's ok to say the word chuckle so soon after Barry's death. Appalling. Moderator please ban.

There certainly bee a change in the attitude of the club since ME came in as CEO to give a more corporate approach to the club which has taken away some of the old style geniality of the amateur days such as the jovial music and the family feel and bring in a more structured approach such as certain players being available in the Kings Bar after the match rather than all the players just going to the bar after etc.

It has brought in a lot of revenue (second highest in Prmeirship) but also brought in a lot more costs such as a director earning £215,000 per year!

OK I slightly segwayed a bit to the other topic regarding costs and revenues, but it relates a bit becaue Max did not want to follow what they wanted to do so left amongst other former staff members etc.

On the other side of the argument, I found Max pretty annoying and am a lot happier with the quality of facilities and stuff for kids etc since it changed. Players appearing in the bar sadly is down to the professionalisation and growth of the sport - not sure you'll find that anywhere but not sure it's just a Quins decision.

What? Kids stuff is worse! It used to be inside, expecting the kids to hang around outside in the middle of the winter is daft! Bars are basically unimproved and now supposed to be catering for nearly twice as many people!

The kids stuff used to be in a tent where the south west food stalls now are during much of the Mad Max era.

But at least it was covered! It's in the open air in the same corner now. It was laterly in the players bar, that's now used for more hospitality.

Not offended by it, just thought it was a bit naff. Thought "give peace a chance" was much funnier. Anyway, it was the players who wanted it binned.

From memory, the not-nots play "three blind mice" when they get what they perceive to be a dodgy decision from the ref...
