Title: Somerset Live on the new "normal"
Post by: deadlyfrom5yardsout on Tuesday 18-Sep-2018, 09:47*
The average points scored per game this year has rocketed up by around 10 points and coaches feel there is not much in it anymore for trying to get turnovers.

I enjoyed reading this article from Bath's perspective....despite THAT picture...

Good article and the interview with TB was both fair and balanced and intelligent.  He seems a straight forward interesting guy.

Interest article, thanks. I fear that their optimism over their maul being back with a bang might be slightly misplaced, as driving us back 20m from an attacking lineout has been pretty easy over the last couple of seasons. Against Bath we reverted to our classic tactic  of not competing at the lineout, but then not being able to stop them marching forward anyway. I find that one of the most fruistrating facets of our play actually. I've been pretty unimpressed with our second row generally so far this season. I know we are missing at least a couple through injury.

As for Wallace not being able to get turnovers, again, sadly I think that's pretty much the norm now anyway. He was also guilty of some pretty weak attempts at tackling on Saturday.

At the start of the season I saw someone advocating law tweaks to allow teams kicking from their own half into the opposition 22 to retain the throw.
The theory was that it would force fullback / winger to drop back making nore space -  thus letting attacking play develop.

Somehow, I think this weeks scores show that is not necessary.

Like the 40-20 in rugby league. Never really seen the point in that law. Not keen on a law tweak which just promotes more kicking

In League it works because there's fewer players who train at long kicks for touch compared to a Union team. In Union, you have the Scrum Half, Fly Half, Both Wings, Full Back, and often one of the centres who will be kicking at distance for touch. In League you've a couple of players who are used to kicking: whoever takes the conversions/kick-offs/dropouts and the player who normally plays dummy half on the last play of a set of 6, when you'll usually see either a crossfield kick or a long clearance.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. I like to watch league occasionally but don't watch it enough and not familiar enough with the laws to know the reasoning behind that one

I find you to be strangely cognisant of the dark side.

I watch it if there's nothing on & there's a game on. I just find it a bit monotonous, to be honest.  I'll watch it, but the "5 tackles & then kick" soon palls. I remember when we had a double header with the League lot a number of years back. After a game where we had something like 14k attending, the RL team managed about 3k.

And when we got back from the loo there were RL fans sitting in our seats!!

It's not something I watch avidly, but if there's a game on & there's nothing else, I'll watch. Oddly enough, there's another factor that makes the 40-20 in RL such a big thing: Apparently the ball itself is harder to kick accurately over long distances. The shape is slightly different to a Union ball (Slightly smaller & lighter). It's like when International games against Italy in Italy used the Mitre ball instead of the Gilbert ball that most other countries used, and kickers found it harder to kick penalties & conversions as the flight was different.

And when we got back from the loo there were RL fans sitting in our seats!!

Chances are that they were *their* season ticket seats too!

I keep an eye on the RL forums just out of interest. If you think that here and the RugbyNetwork boards have some fruitloops on them, you should see some of the conspiracy theorists (fantasists really) that are over there!
