I think it's Middlesex Merit Tables - Division 3.

Thought I’d posted this but let me try again:

We are in MMT3 and (for anyone interested) having a decent season.

We started with 4 big wins (average of 60+ points per game) which left us top of the league but vying with an equally dominant Hammersmith & Fulham team.

Week 5 we had a closer win but still a bonus point. Hammers seemed to drop a point leaving us top.

We played round 6 on Saturday just gone and beat Quintin who started the day in third. However we missed the bonus and so have dropped our first point of the season. Hammers got another big win so we are currently 2nd on points difference.

This Saturday we play Hammers in a top of the table clash and follow that up with a match against Belsize Park (now in third) on the 17th.

More with the pro club rather than the pro players. To be fair we are probably at too low a level for the pro players to notice us!

Since David Ellis came in, he’s strengthened the link so our coaches all come from the community team and our DoR is one of the Quins Ladies’ coaches. We also had Jim Evans down for a line out session a few months ago.

The spin off from that is that we have had the opportunity to attend pro training sessions and our annual game at the Stoop has been happening much more regulalry in recent years.

As part of the 150th there was a strengthening of the identity as one club so since then everyone from u5 to vets wears the same kit as the pros.

Plus our club president is still Bob Hiller and this Friday, a load of us will be going to the annual Harlequin Players Association lunch.

Sounds good. I think its important to  have a link between the pro and the amateurs/affiliates, all Quins after all. Always thought the website (which I think is cack) should have more about it, updates how they are getting on etc.

In the pro club’s defence, they do give us space in the programme for home games.

If you want updates however, feel free to have a look at http://www.harlequinrugby.co.uk/teams/40203 as there are generally match reports - especially when we’re winning!

And after a week off, the Ams we were back in action yesterday against Belsize Park IV. Belsize started the game in 3rd, close behind H&F so were definitely a potential banana skin.

Final score Quins 24 - 18 Belsize. 8 from 8 with 6 bonus points.

Next weekend is a cup quarter final against Old Streetonians IIIs.

Well Deadly, there were even fewer of them this week. Cup weekend as mentioned and the Ams beat a much improved Old Streetonians III 29-5 to advance to the semi finals.

First half of the season finished with a 33-0 win over Thamesians Spartans. So far we’ve had played 9, won 9 with 7 bonus points.

The streak continues with Hayes unable to raise a side for yesterday’s fixture. Now played 10, won 10, 8 bonus points.

I think most coaches could manage a win against a team that doesn’t show up!

You did indeed beat Thamesians Spartans (2XV). Maybe because last season you were in the same league as their 1XV??

We were, we moved into the merits to rebuild. We played 2 fun games against their 1st XV last season. 1 win and 1 loss. Always good fun though   :)

Not much fun for the rest of the teams in the league. I'm sure, like Hayes, more teams won't bother playing the return fixtures.

I played against Hayes once. Awful club. I ended up in hospital being x-rayed for a suspected broken leg; that was the high point of the game. I think my team mates were jealous. Cold showers with about two inches of water in them. Can't remember if we even got fed.

For those who are interested, the Ams started yesterday having won 14/14 and 2 points clear of Hammersmith & Fulham at the top of the league.

Yesterday was a genuine 14-pointer though as H&F were our guests in Teddington.

The end result was a convincing 65-12 win for Quins leaving us 7 points clear at the top with 3 games to go.

You may find things a little more difficult next year in Division 2!

If we do go up (promotion isn’t secured yet) we’d expect div 2 to be harder but hopefully we can do ourselves proud.

To update the conversion, we won our last league game of the season yesterday. It meant we finished with 18 wins from 18 games and therefore finished as league champions.

Which included a couple of walk overs. Anyway well done.

If you go up to division 2, you should meet my club.....

Ah cool, QQ. Looking forward to hopefully seeing you next season. Who do you play for?

And yes a couple of WOs. Not ideal but I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a sad fact of amateur rugby life.

IMO, the geographical spread of a Middlesex league combined with the similarly broad spread of abilities means that teams can often struggle to raise enthusiasm (and therefore players) for certain games. The situation is felt even more acutely in a Herts/Middx league.

Cough!

My playing days are, sadly over. Fortunately not playing has given me a spread of expertise and opinion which I lacked before....

As you say the WO is quite a sad and common feature of rugby at this level. So many clubs are really teetering on the brink. a subject for another thread, perhaps?

Don't think so.

It's not how it works. They dropped 4 levels from last season to this by dropping out of the leagues (hence the 18/18). They need to reapply to join the league system.

When I first retired, I gained more of a spread of waistline... unlike the svelte thing that I am now of course...

Hopefully they can apply to rejoin the Leagues , not sure which one , would it be Herts/ Middx 2 ? , that's where Sarries Amateurs are now .
Title: Re: Quins Amateurs
Post by: Cookie on Monday 11-Mar-2019, 14:10*
It would be HM2, which they were in last year. Sarries are in HM1. They're clearly are in the wrong league. As has been said before, they W1 L1 against our 1XV last season and this season are in the same league as our 2XV whom they, unsurprisingly, humped twice.

Ok thanks I thought it ought to be HM2 , but don't often see teams apply for status from the Merit Leagues  , although they should and possibly in time they could get a 2nd XV to play in the Merits .
