Title: England team v NZ -- Ashton replaces Nowell
Post by: Gone on Thursday 08-Nov-2018, 12:23*
Nowell and Hepburn out, Ashton and Moon in, Underhill for injured Curry....

England head coach Eddie Jones has named his matchday squad to play New Zealand in their second Quilter International Test at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday (KO 3pm, live on Sky Sports HD).

Jones makes three changes to the starting XV that beat South Africa 12-11 last weekend.

Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks), who scored a try when England last beat New Zealand in 2012, will start on the right wing.

Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs) is named as loose-head prop while Sam Underhill comes in at open-side flanker following an ankle injury to Tom Curry (Sale Sharks).

There are three changes to the bench with Alec Hepburn (Exeter Chiefs), Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints) and Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs) all named as finishers.

Owen Farrell (Saracens), who will co-captain the team alongside Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), is one point short of reaching 700 points for England.

“The expectation for Saturday is no different to any other Test match. We want to be at our best, better than we were in the previous Test match and we want to play with pride and passion which ignites the fans," said Jones.

"It’s been a good week, the players have recovered well, trained well on Tuesday, exceptionally well on Wednesday and we look forward to the challenge of taking on New Zealand on Saturday.

“The crowd last week was wonderful, we had great support and enthusiasm for the game and they saw a great Test match and I’m sure on Saturday they will see another.”

England starting XV

15 Elliot Daly (Wasps, 22 caps), 14 Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks, 40 caps), 13 Henry Slade (Exeter Chiefs, 14 caps), 12 Ben Te’o (Worcester Warriors, 14 caps), 11 Jonny May (Leicester Tigers, 38 caps), 10 Owen Farrell (Saracens, 62 caps) co-captain, 9 Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers, 78 caps), 1 Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs, 1 cap), 2 Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints, 94 caps) co-captain, 3 Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins, 14 caps), 4 Maro Itoje (Saracens, 23 caps), 5 George Kruis (Saracens, 26 caps), 6 Brad Shields (Wasps, 3 caps), 7 Sam Underhill (Bath Rugby, 6 caps), 8 Mark Wilson (Newcastle Falcons, 5 caps).

Finishers

16 Jamie George (Saracens, 29 caps), 17 Alec Hepburn (Exeter Chiefs, 3 caps), 18 Harry Williams (Exeter Chiefs, 12 caps), 19 Charlie Ewels (Bath Rugby, 7 caps), 20 Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints, 65 caps), 21 Danny Care (Harlequins, 82 caps), 22 George Ford (Leicester Tigers, 48 caps), 23 Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs, 27 caps).

Is it bad that I'm wishing away the next year to post-World Cup when we can replace him with someone sensible?

That back row is dire

Moon deserves a start ahead of Hepburn though

Back row, centres and full back all problems there. Moon deserves his start, Daly and Ashton don't. There's no balance to that nap row at all... Very odd...

Insanity. May and Itoje should be starting for England int hose positions. The others? Not so much.

That is a very disappointing team sheet - madness or genius, I guess we will soon find out. Wishing I wasn't going as don't really want a front row seat to a humiliation! But may be eating humble pie come Sunday

Strange picks as  back row cover  .. what did Mercer do so wrong ? -

Back have potential to run the ball back at the AB's , let hope they get some ....  im sure they'll get high ball catching and tackling practice

EJ says he has picked Ashton over Nowell to start on 'gut feel' - fingers crossed then .

My guess is Eddie is still trying new things before the World Cup: new players, new combinations, varied gameplans, playing in different areas etc.
Rather him do these things now than in the World Cup warm up games stage of things; peak next year in the most important year. I mean he does seem that he likes to be vary prepared and pays great attention to detail.

I’d have replaced Nowell, didn’t convince. Give Ashton his due and give him a run.

Heard Will Greenwood interview on the radio this morning where he says that the way Eddie Jones is trying to get the edge is by controlling the lineouts . Which is why he has 4 lineout jumpers in the starting 8 and 2 more on the bench .

He says they got into Marks' head last week which is why he had a really bad day throwing and will try to do the same tomorrow .

Can’t really argue with most of his team though. I saw pre-match predictions of a 30-point drubbing.

Yeah Jones has really proved himself again. New England side developing and some v good picks in the pack.

Still not convinced by Slade - Daly maybe.

Ashton well worth the shirt.

It's hard to beat anyone when you miss 46 tackles! Farrell missed 11, the backs 23 combined v AB backs' 4.

Interesting bit in the I Paper about the match; sort of criticizes Farrell for electing to kick to the corner on a couple of occasions when points were on offer but then goes on a long tirade about the fact that Sinckler lost the ball that he was the real culprit. Then talks about the way that Sinckler was pumped up and needs to control himself. No Brown or Robshaw in the side so this clearly brings Sinckler into the firing line.

I thought that sink had a good game. The only fault was that he should have been subbed about 5 minutes earlier as I think he had emptied the tanks during the first half and was having less impact

Yeah wonder how they ended up choosing Sink to have a go at? Lazy idiots.

Most reasonable writers said he had his best game in an England shirt.

Yeah, Sinkler was excellent.

The Sink was superb, other than the "dropped" ball from a poor pass that he never actually gathered I thought he was one of the better players for England, did a lot of carrying and tackling.

Sinck had a great game. One unfortunate knock on, and towards the end seemed to be getting a bit too angry so good time for him to go.
