England have a lot of talent at U20 level and yes we won in 2024, but we have not overachieved, and realistically a large number of new players come into the team each year, so is not an excuse for 2025.

The thing about U20s is that some years you're just going to get better players than other years, and the same goes for other nations. Occasionally, you're not going to have the necessary quality while other teams do. I'm not saying he would be my preferred coach, but one bad year in the U20s doesn't necessarily mean a lot.

After the referee has called “use it” at the ruck, no additional players from the team in possession may join the ruck.

I've been calling for this for a very long time. A good change, as long as the ref calls "use it" quickly enough.

I'll grumble about Arundel and I'm not 100% convinced that Dingwall is a better option than Ojomoh. But this is against Wales, and we could probably have put out any 23 from the squad. We'll have to see if this still stays the same for tougher games.

I am not sure I agree with the first one (though I recognise that it formalises current practice), but I like all the others - especially the 3rd one

The card for a PT? I thought they normally gave one if they saw who committed the offence

So, they are still going to permit the nine to be offside at a ruck (15.4), and use their hands in a ruck (15/11). But once they call use it, nobody can join and make the nine more offside.
Have they ever thought about applying the laws they already have?

Interesting ideas from our SH friends as they look to "further reduce stoppages, inspire positive play and simplify the officiating of the game" 🤔

  • It will no longer be mandatory for the referee to issue a yellow or red card to a player on the defending team when awarding a penalty try. Any sanction will be at the discretion of the referee. (Law 8.3)
  • Accidental offsides and teams delaying playing the ball away from a ruck will result in free kicks rather than scrums. (Law 10.5 and Law 15.17)
  • After the referee has called “use it” at the ruck, no additional players from the team in possession may join the ruck. (Law 15.17)
  • Teams will be permitted to pass the ball back into their half before kicking a 50:22. (Law 18.8a)
  • Players will be allowed to take quick taps within one metre either side of the of the mark, or anywhere behind the mark, if they are within that two-metre channel running parallel to the touchlines. (Law 20.2)
  • The TMO will only intervene unprompted if the referee has overlooked an act of serious foul play (yellow card level or above), or a clear and obvious infringement leading to a try. The assistance of the TMO at any other time can only be instigated by the referee

Not sure how much difference being able to pass back for a 50:22 makes. Defence will still set up the same way once you've crossed the 10m line. And any reason to remove scrums is by definition a bad thing

Would have preferred Ojomah or Atkinson over Dingwall at 12, as I think both of those players have higher ceilings. Fisilau would have been also my pick at 8, with Earl at 7...but time will tell how well it goes. Shame to read the reason for Itoje being on the bench as I wasn't aware his mother had passed

Ah cheers - I was wondering why he was benched. I saw he missed the 6N launch to go to his mum's funeral in Nigeria. Very touching that George stands in (both at the launch and as Captain) given he was in the same boat a couple of years ago.
