Bothma has said that he was not looked after while he had his injuries and that Gustard had seemed like he didn’t want him around. This led Renaldo to become depressed and I think he developed a drink problem. I’m sure I remember this from an interview he gave when he was in Israel.

I think he also said he considered suicide.
I suspect many of us fans did as well.
Bothma obviously had a terrible time of it, and he seems to have been treated awfully, but he never looked good enough on the pitch. He was a major letdown. Perhaps with more support he would've been a real asset to the team - I'm a firm believer that good leadership involves knowing how to get the best out of different personalities - but from an outside perspective he was another in a line of probably inexpensive signings we took a punt on that didn't come off (Luamanu, Ismael, CSW, etc)
Yeah, bothma wasn't great and wasn't a big loss when he left, but doesn't mean he wasn't treated badly all the same
Kingston was over promoted and it was a shame to see his involvement at quins end how it did
Gustard I was pleased to see the back of and his legacy at quins was not a good one

Apart from a few signings.
He might have made a few good signings but he created an unhappy squad and a toxic atmosphere. The knock on effect is an equally dissatisfied supporter base.

The best thing about Gustard is that his departure created such a wave of joy from the players, the rest of the coaching team and the fans that it spurred the team on to glory that season!
Actually, when you look at a number of the players comments both at the time and afterwards, some of them (including key players like Danny, Joe, etc) were quite sorry to see Gustard go. He hadn't really lost the dressing room per se, just that the players were just not on the same page as him in terms of tactics & couldn't make it work.

Wasn't he regarded as overcomplicating everything to the point that no-one was quite sure what he was after?

I think it was more that he was trying to control too much himself - a classic mistake for someone taking a big step up in leadership - and failing to delegate to everyone else. Care in particular has spoken about how the players felt they had to step up and show that they could take accountability for performance after "a good man lost his job."
You do have to take some of the players comments with a pinch of salt though.
They will rarely come out and say that the old coach was rubbish. Basically, they don't really want to burn their bridges as they may end up wanting to go and play for a team that has some connection to them (e.g. Marchant at SF).

Not sure many people in any profession want to work for a terrible manager again
Was it not the rumours swirling around Marcus Smith threatening to leave that convinced Quins to get shot of Gustard?
