Report: Quins U19s secure dramatic comeback to beat Japan U19

Harlequins Under-19s snatched victory from Japan Under-19s as Math Jones’s last minute penalty secured a late 38-36 comeback win at The Stoop.

What Happened:
Japan raced into an early lead at The Stoop as the visitors stunned Quins with three quick scores. Ryuta Hirao and Kohaku Suda showcased their speed to lift Japan into a 12-0 lead, before Loketi Bruceneol finished breakaway score (0-19).

Quins began to feel their way into the game and a penalty into the corner gave them their first chance to cross as Sam Bland rumbled over from short range. However, Sora Hayashi’s intercept score soon after saw Japan restore their three-try buffer (7-24).

Sakaya scored his second, before Jack Tyler crossed on the cusp of half-time. Ashton Graham’s crunching tackle provided the turnover for Quins to launch their attack as Tyler dived over in the corner (12-24).

Graham was again the catalyst for Quins’ first score of the second half as the hooker broke through the midfield and the ball was recycled for replacement prop Josh Andrews to burrow over the line (21-31).

Haruta Kukuho scored from a driving maul to extend Japan’s lead, until Harry Cromie darted over the line with a quarter of an hour to play to bring Quins within eight points (28-36).

With ten minutes left on the clock, They Povey conjured up a magical score to bring Quins within a point. The rangy centre chipped and chased from his own twenty-two before kicking through and winning the race to the ball (35-36).

Quins completed their memorable comeback in the final passage of play as they forced a penalty 35 metres out from goal. With the final play confirmed by the referee they opted to kick for the posts, which Math Jones stepped up to convert (38-36).

21-12 is 9 points. 5 for the try so how did Quins get 4 points?

Or is it sloppy reporting and both tries were actually converted? Looks like kicking may have been the difference. Is that 3/6 conversions managed for Japan?

I think it is just a bit of sloppy reporting.
Basically, our kicker was on great form.
He nailed all five conversions. One of which was from out wide and one was a drop-kick.
He also kicked the high pressure penalty at the end. (Think Ramos on Saturday, but slightly closer to the posts.)

Japan missed quite a few of their conversions. From memory, 2 were tricky kicks from out wide - but one was fairly straight-forward and he just hooked it.

Japan were really quick out of the blocks and appeared to be much better fed than our lads. So, our pack was getting mullered.
Also, we were trying to run everything - which didn't really go well.

We started to gain a foothold late in the first half though and from then on it was a good match.

A few points though.
Quins fielded a normal sized team. Japan fielded a big team and did loads of subs. This probably contributed to them losing.
The Japanese back 3 had some serious speed. Their no. 11 was quick.
Japan gave away a lot of penalties - but there was no yellow card. I assume that this was due to it being a friendly. E.g. they gave away 2 penalties during one rolling maul that was headed towards their tryline. But no real punishment.
Also, they often early engaged in the scrums - but Sir only awarded free kicks (i.e. no penalties). We normally struggled with free kicks due to the size of their pack and their tendency to go straight offside (which Sir then pinged them for.)
We would have scored a lot more if our line-out had worked - but it didn't.
