Report: Quins U19s secure dramatic comeback to beat Japan U19
Harlequins Under-19s snatched victory from Japan Under-19s as Math Jones’s last minute penalty secured a late 38-36 comeback win at The Stoop.
What Happened:
Japan raced into an early lead at The Stoop as the visitors stunned Quins with three quick scores. Ryuta Hirao and Kohaku Suda showcased their speed to lift Japan into a 12-0 lead, before Loketi Bruceneol finished breakaway score (0-19).
Quins began to feel their way into the game and a penalty into the corner gave them their first chance to cross as Sam Bland rumbled over from short range. However, Sora Hayashi’s intercept score soon after saw Japan restore their three-try buffer (7-24).
Sakaya scored his second, before Jack Tyler crossed on the cusp of half-time. Ashton Graham’s crunching tackle provided the turnover for Quins to launch their attack as Tyler dived over in the corner (12-24).
Graham was again the catalyst for Quins’ first score of the second half as the hooker broke through the midfield and the ball was recycled for replacement prop Josh Andrews to burrow over the line (21-31).
Haruta Kukuho scored from a driving maul to extend Japan’s lead, until Harry Cromie darted over the line with a quarter of an hour to play to bring Quins within eight points (28-36).
With ten minutes left on the clock, They Povey conjured up a magical score to bring Quins within a point. The rangy centre chipped and chased from his own twenty-two before kicking through and winning the race to the ball (35-36).
Quins completed their memorable comeback in the final passage of play as they forced a penalty 35 metres out from goal. With the final play confirmed by the referee they opted to kick for the posts, which Math Jones stepped up to convert (38-36).
