Being ex-Army (24 years) I too agree that the minority let both sides down. Military police, both RMP and Shore Patrol, attend on duty in support of the Met but mostly inside the stadium. It does appear that they have been less 'vigorous' in later years compared to earlier no nonsense responses, possibly due to complaints from non-serving personnel getting caught up? Before the event serving personnel are warned any arrested will be on Courts Martial so I do wonder if it is ex-members causing a lot of the trouble? Also many serving will arrive on coaches and never leave the stadium confines. Food for thought.

I have attended many times on coach trips from ships and shore bases and stayed in the confines of the ground so have been unaware of the carnage in town. Unfortunately in recent years the behaviour of some of the coach parties at Fleet services leaves a lot to be desired especially service units coming from the West Country
A lot of pubs and clubs in the Portsmouth area run trips now and many people use it as an excuse to get hammered first thing in the morning instead of a beer with breakfast and then a couple of sociable drinks on the trip up and then trawl the car park looking for old shipmates (in my case very old!!)
One good aspect of the game is the passion with which the National Anthem is sung

it's a bit like the boat race and varsity match . two meaningless teams compete against each other ina meaningless fixture causing chaos and carnage unnecessarily for local residents

Aren’t all teams and sports matches meaningless unless you have a vested interest? So unless you’ve been part of the service community I guess you’ll never understand the rivalry. The carnage I’m with you completely unnecessary.

That may be true but they’ve been saying that for about the last 10 years, so while it might happen it also might not.

It never used to be like this. I remember going to this match in the early 70's Most spectators where WW2 veterans.
It was a great social occasion and standard of behaviour good. It is evident that the popularisation of this event has bought with it poor behaviour. But wait a minute - is it not the case that service men are under military rules even when not in uniform? It is the fault of the top brass that this has been allowed to happen.

Yeah frankly the ones who cause the trouble generally don’t look like they could fit in the uniform - and as you say, serving personnel would be in the poop because there are MPs around on the day.

The serving soldiers and sailors do get arrested and disciplined if they step out of line some even get sent to the glasshouse.

As has been said a lot of the issues come from Ed serving and civilians who’ve never served.

We are only expected around 60,000 this year so hope it’s well. The Army and Navy rugby communities love this fixture and really want to keep it at Twickers. I hope it goes well.

Just watched the Highlights on BFPS TV. Seemed a really good game. Big shout out To Sapper Jack Johnson the playmaker for the Army.  Has also played for Medway this season, my old club. Really thrilled to see all his hard work pay off. Well Done Jack!
