High tackles are illegal due to the obvious dangers to the head, however, conversely shouldn't dropping the shoulder and crouching as you approach being tackled also be illegal?

With all the concussion/head injuries and the press it gets with the likes of Steve Thompson it feels refs sometimes are over compensating and making up for things before that would be ignored, just because the head is involved. I’m also not downplaying refs wanting to prevent serious injury, as that is correct.

Personally I feel the VDW red was harsh as it was a poor tackle technique, and a yellow would of been more sufficient. I can’t help but wonder if some players will look to exploit any potential head contact in an effort to help turn the game in their favour

It is the poor tackle technique they are trying to remove from the game.  They want people low and that is why if you start low but the tackled player significantly lowers their height then you will not be getting a Red card.  As in the other day can't remember which Prem game but the tackler was 90 degrees at the waist and due to tackled player lowering their height significantly there was significant head contact, outcome rugby incident not card at all, if there had not been players very low then it would have been Red.

How often do we see card for taking he catcher out in the air these days, not often I would say.  When first introduced there were lots of cards, people have changed how they jump in the most part.  That is what they are trying to achieve in the tackle, hopefully we get there

Yeah, and like i said I thought a red card was very harsh. Yellow most certainly. but the tackling player made an effort akin to something I would if I was asked to suddenly tackle him shortly after necking a pint. Also, there have been similar incidents in many games where these "hand offs" if you like, go unpunished, or are given a yellow. So its more about consistency

Seen lots of people online referencing the height of the tackler during the VDM incident... but it's totally irrelevant. No matter what you think of the tackler's technique, he's totally legal until such point as he tackles the ball carrier around the neck or head. Him being bolt upright is not a mitigating factor.

He copped a forearm to the chops and red card was absolutely the right decision.
