Itoje
« on: »
There’s a reference in the article below to us having interest in signing Itoje who is out of contract at Sarries at the end of the season. I assume that most clubs would have an interest, but anyone know if ours has any serious intent or likelihood?

Saracens have said they are confident that their England lock Maro Itoje will sign a deal at Allianz Park to extend the contract that expires next summer

His history under Gussie maybe gives this a tinge of realism?

Could we afford him?  Must be after close to £1m - maybe £800k.  Perhaps if Horwill is calling it a day.  Would rather pay a bit less and have someone who will be available more often.

I'd rather sign someone who won't be away half the season too, cracking good player though he is. Is Horwill in contract past the end of this season? It really hurts us when we lose too many during internatinal windows. Although I think that Robshaw may well be around more going forward, if he does go to RWC next year I can't see him doing much beyond it.

I think we can file this one under unlikely. Not a snowball in hells chance this will happen unless something is about to go horribly wrong at Sarries and I really don't see that happening either.

Itoje has played 7 games for Sarries so far this season, and played 14 in each of the past two seasons. For comparison, Horwill played 15 in 16-17, 12 last year.

I think someone like Lood de Jager is a better option and will be available more throughout the season.

Not sure that is common Knowledge PP ,  and they can be changed season to season subject to contract renegotiations - I suppose its who is paid the most this season .. follow the money !

Given how he's building the side, I can't see that Itoje works for us -- as others say, he's guaranteed not to be around and we need second rows already let alone needing one to cover him once he's here.

This is quite common knowledge.

It's Brown, Care, Marler, Robshaw.

In the Guardian article McCall is quoted as saying "It would be an unbelievable shame if we had to lose players we had grown ourselves." A shame indeed. Like an unbelievable shame for Wasps losing Daly, who has been in their Academy since leaving Whitgift School. There are no doubt others...

Just exactly how can Sarries afford Daly with the squad they already have and the salary cap? They must have to lose a key player surely.

.... I should have added to my earlier post: always assuming the Daly rumour is correct.

Really QQ ? , my understanding was that you only had 2 players whose salary didn't count towards the salary cap which was designed to enable teh signing of world class talent - however English qualified players have salary 'subsidy' to the tune of 600k across the board so unless the English guys earns tons more than non English it makes no sense to use them - my  guess would be Saili and Horwill - but it will be the accountants that decide , and its a moving feast.

Itoje couldn’t be a Marquee player for us as we’d be signing him from another English club.
