Matchday squad for first game next week - predictions
« on: »
Okay, I can't wait any longer. Our new membership cards came through in the post yesterday (we moved seats - before others start panicking and wondering why they haven't had new ones if they just renewed the same seats!) and now I'm way too excited for the season to start. So the question is...

Who do we think/hope will line up next Friday? Go...

Not sure if MArchant will be involved as presumably he's missed a fair bit of pre-season.

Back row will be interesting with Robshaw, Dombrandt, Clifford and Chisholm all fit as far as I know, plus the new guys.

Second row is completely open.

Hooker I guess with Elia out it's straight shoot out between Buchanan and Baldwin.

Has Landajo joined up yet? If not then I guess it's Mulchrone and Saunders for now.

I assume our new SA wing is likely to start with Ibitoye

I think maybe it will be a strictly second string side bearing in mind how long to go until the league starts.

Precisely what Gussie alluded to in the session on Monday evening.

Obviously wrong, but I would have thought with no friendlies we might have put out a decent side.  I guess that will come in a week or two. In that case

Lambert
Crumpton (I would have him in my first team, but I get the impression PG is not as sold yet)
Swainston
Young
Freeman
Bothma (If he is around)
Evans
Lawday
Mulchrone/Saunders
Herron
Chisholm
Lang
Northmore
Murley (If fit, be good for him to get a run out after so long out)
Morris

Botta/Head
Buchanan/Musk
Kerrod/Sassone
Lamb
Kenningan
Barlow
Gabs
Wheeldon

Lang cover FH

You are correct HT , Gustard says he is treating the Prem Cup as his pre season friendlies . He gave the impression that the first two games were run outs and we would see more when it came to the Gloucester and Sarries games .

He made the point several times that because they had no friendlies in August they were working with 'ball in hand' a month earlier than usual and there were lots of plans and strategies he was keen to work on - including plays introduced by Sean Long to find space in flat defences .

He talked up Kerrod , Baldwin , Lewies , Ishmael and Herron as  players that have impressed  .. so wouldn't be surprised to see them figure and get an early home debut .

Re the Sean Long mention.  I wonder if that will include more grubber kicks/dinks through.  Also, a few more balls back inside, on the reverse.

he didn't go into specifics , but like you I would expect those to figure - Gustard spoke highly of him and his analytical skills - also sounds like the sort of coach that gets listened to by the squad  !

If I were in PG's shoes, I would want to prepare for a serious tilt at the title this year. We were agonisingly close to Top 4 last year and we get to go into the season proper with a relatively light depletion of the squad for RWC, and in particular a fit Robshaw and Brown with a point to prove (I am taking their reversion to their 2011 haircuts as a statement of intent).

To that end, I would expect him to do a lot of player rotation in the Prem Cup games, trying out combinations and settling on who is really in form. I am not planning to look too seriously at the results, but watch individual performances to see who is putting themselves forward.

I think we'll start with

Auterac
Crumpton
Collier
Freeman
Symons
Robshaw (c)
Lawday
Bothma
Landajo
Lang
Ibitoye
Saili
Northmore
Ismaiel
Brown

But then add in all the new players at least for a run out throughout the tournament, ending whatever seems likely to be our last game with

Botta
Baldwin
Collier
Symons
Another lock, whoever shows up best of the newbies
Robshaw
Clifford (unless Evans etc have a Stormer)
Dombrandt
Landajo
Smith
Ismaiel (assuming Goneva is with Fiji?)
Taps
Marchant (Saili if he's called up)
Murley
Brown

Auterac, Crumpton, Kerrod?, Another lock, Chisholm, Mulchrone, Lang, Saili

To be set for the season with our initial starting XV

I have a feeling Dino Lamb maybe one of the starting locks, ahead of some of the newbies. Gussy has seen enough to give the lad a new contract after the academy and I hope this season he can stay free of injuries and kick on. He was a regular in the England U20 squad. I want to see him getting some MOTM awards this time round.

I would like to see the new guy get a run out and some players who have a point to prove:

Botta
Baldwin
Kerrod
Lamb
Freeman
Baby Chisholm (C)- big season for him
Evans
Lawday

Saunders
Herron
Ismaiel
Saili
Northmore
Ibitoye
Morris

Bench: Crumpton, Auterac, Swainston, Lewies, Robshaw, Landajo (if he's here), Lang, Lynagh

Think this is a pretty good shout.
