On a previous thread about the squad selection for the Ulster match, I queried whether perhaps the prize money available for a Top4 finish in the Gallagher Premiership might significantly outweigh a Challenge Cup winner prize - thereby perhaps vindicating the frustrating team selection. I've since tried to research what prize money is on offer for finishing places in the Gallagher Premiership v Champions Cup v Challenge Cup but have largely drawn a blank. A couple of years ago the winner of the Champions Cup received £600k according to an article in the Express Newspaper, but searches of the Gallagher Premiership and EPCR websites reveal nothing. Does anyone else have any information on this ? It would genuinely help to (perhaps) explain some of the selection strategies employed for different competitions.

Might I suggest that there are further layers to the question.

Aiming for top 4 means that a team will hopefully make top 6 and therefore champions cup next season.

A cup run on the other hand is literally win or bust - there is no automatic spot in the big competition for the runner up of the Challenge Cup.

I assume (but could very well be wrong) that the TV cash for Champs Cup is greater than for the Challenge.

I think you might be right. If I remember correctly, there was a big concern following the incident that shall not be named that we might lose our H Cup  (as it then was) cash.

There's also the fact that being inthe Big Boys cup makes it easier to attract larger name sponsors & advertisers to the club, alongside larger potential crowds meaning better revenue. Face it, it's easier to sell tickets (including away fans) & advertising/sponsorship to Quins vs Leinster on a Saturday afternoon than to Quins vs Zebre on a Thursday evening!

They also want to get the STHs back watching meaningful rugby for the end of the season which means the League.

Last year £24.75 profit

This year £2.26 mil loss, broken down, revenue down by £4.7 mill due to Covid and last year they had £14.1 mill form the CVC deal.

So, 2019/20 £24.75 profit minus £14.1 (CVC) money, minus lost revenue £4.7 (Covid) = £5.95 mill from winning the premiership & euro cup in prize money?

I could be very wide and have my foot in touch though.......

It depends on whether the figures quoted as "Covid related" includes things like non-matchday revenue streams like conferencing, etc for a start.

You're a year out!

The £24.75M profit was for the 2018/19 season.  The £2.26M loss is for the 2019/20 season. 

They then had a double whammy for that year, since any prize money from the 2018/19 season Premiership final would've presumably been paid in that season, but the payments for the 2019/20 Premiership and HC wins weren't, as they came after the end of the year.

Whatever the value of winning both competitions is, it'll figure in their 2020/21 results.
