Schalk Brits
« on: Wednesday 04-Jul-2018, 14:18* »
A mate of mine texted asking "what's this I hear about Brits joining Quins?"

First I've heard of it, and he's not come back to me with any more info - does anyone know anything about this? Obviously he now may feel he has a chance of RWC and will need to keep playing club rugby at a high level. Last I heard was he had an offer from Cambridge but was considering applying to Oxford - Quins could work alongside his Cambridge studies, a la Roberts? Would be surprised to see him head anywhere but Sarries, though no club in the country would turn him down I imagine - I for one would certainly take a season of him at the Stoop

Well we must have some spare change if we were trying to tempt Ashton.  (Quite a bit of spare change)

I'd be delighted if he joined, though slightly surprised. Guess Gustard would be a factor.

It would solve some of our issues at Hooker that's for sure! Is he cabable of being our starting hooker for a season though, how old is he now?

I think he's 37?  He seems very fit.  I think he could bring a lot to Quins.  Would he be as effective in the winter months on a wet pitch vs on Sarries artificial pitch

I heard he was 'helping' at Old Elthamians next season

The commentators in the last SA match mentioned him possibly re-thinking his retirement in the hope of a crack at the RWC squad. Personally I don't think he'd be in the squad if (and it's a big "if") the other hookers are fit, available, and in good form. I'd put him behind Marx, du Plessis and Mbonambi, plus the brilliantly named Chilliboy is back on the scene and playing well. There is also Acker van der Merwe who is a real find. But you never know...

I guess if you are the SA Coach you want all and any viable options available to you.

i agree.  He offers something quite different to their other hookers too.
