That Japan game really did make Eddie go doolally. Mercer made 1 metre in the game so is canned forever age 20. Lozowski has a poor game so is canned forever aged 24 despite being a fantastic player in a problem position for England. Care disagrees with Eddie so is persona non grata after that.

Daly has a shocker under the high ball and in defence and can't be crowbarred out of the team for years.

Mercer if he plays cards right could maybe get on the tour to Australia. I'm not entirely up with the selection policy for outside England though.

To me, Simmonds was fairly quiet in the 6 nations. 8 vs 8 Dombrandt was the clear winner and made more of an impact across the park. For all the sing song about his carrying I didn't think Simmonds offered anymore than what BV would of.

The selection policy is "no", basically. There was talk about "special circumstances" for overseas selection when Fat Steffon was doing his thing in France but nothing came of that; no-one's going to break the selection agreement for a number 8 when we have two good ones duking it out already.

And yes, Simmonds retaining the shirt made no sense to me either. My view is he's changed his carrying approach this season and he looks a bit scared of being held up / hit by a dominant tackle, so he's aiming "down" when he carries and always hits the deck as a result. So he carries a lot and makes yards but it's never more than that - no breaks, no offloads - and while he does make a lot of tackles and has excellent workrate it's not the impact we were hoping for. Meanwhile, Dombrandt was near the top of the table for turnovers won in the 6N despite playing mostly off the bench, runs great lines, has great hands, is a proper lineout option, and is a heavy carrier on top of that.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets mentioned in team talks...

It might be fair to say that no-one is writing us off, but who is saying we are ‘favourites’? No-one I’ve seen.

If there’s any doubt about Montpellier, it’s down to their awful away record which (at least at the time of writing  ;)) is nothing to do with us.
