Most of the interpretations and clarifications of the laws - which are by definition far more complex than the basic laws - don't appear to be online. I figured Wayne Barnes talking about it would be proof enough.

You want clarification on whether you are allowed to drop the ball?

No, obviously not. I want to know where holding the ball morphed into having at least a fingertip touching it until it hits the ground. There must have been something.

I've seen an earlier clip from 5 or 6 years ago with WB and Ben Kay; Kay says he would like the law to be like that. Well at some point since, his wish was granted.

That's just a WB explanation. There must be a clarification or something which mentions this gap between the laws and how refs are judging it.

It doesn't need to be in the laws. It's just a way of explaining what constitutes a knock on, which is essentially common sense.

The lineout is an interesting one. Riley lost first lineout on pitch. The issue is less about the throwing and more the jumpers, movement and athleticism.

Quins have typically always had one big lock (non jumper - front man) so the oppo know they don’t need to worry. On Friday we only had Hammond and Lewies as the major options - Dommers is rarely used as well. Evans is a non jumper and thus another issue!

Thus easy to defend/attack. When Lamb, Kenningham and Chisholm play our lineout is so much better. I think CCS we old be a good lineout option.

If we had 4 or even 3 good middle/back jumpers we would be much better at lineout.

Yes, I can't argue with that or what JG said. I reacted at the time to watching, in slow motion, someone quite clearly dropping the ball.

Incidentally, where is this separation business defined? I can't find it in the laws or clarifications.

It does say the player should be holding the ball, in the laws. In which case I wouldn't suggest asking Cadan to hold a pint of beer, let alone a newborn child.

You can't disagree with this. It's not an opinion. It's fact.

For what it's worth I think there was probably separation, and no doubt cadan should neve have given the officials an option, but from the replays they saw it should have stood.

Wilson is also English, so the pro-scottish, anti-english "banter" is particularly lame. Thoroughly unpleasant guy by all accounts
Title: Re: Teams Up!

Wilson's Glasgow bias was obviously there to counteract the general Quins love in you normally feel when you have Monye with his Quins pom poms on the touchline. It must be hard when you're not used to it.

It's not the Glasgow bias that was the problem, really. You expect and accept that from players and ex players, it's par for the course. It's the constant needle and the vibe that he's the guy who thinks he has the funniest banter on the planet while coming across as the bloke that makes women instinctively cover their drinks when he enters the room.

He was notorious as a player for a reason and it's not hard to see why when this is what he's like when he isn't playing.

Walker and green were poor. Lynagh sifting defence too. Lewies adds nothing really.

Smith excellent.

Ref was interesting. Both teams could have felt hard done by at times. We bombed 3 try scoring chances before our first try. And looked knackered from about 50-70.

No way Hammond should lose out to Lewies. Riley in for walker is a no brainer.

Still, we won, which is all that matters. Can't make the 1/4 final, but hope it's away to Bordeaux. Think we have a better chance against them.

All that counts at the end of the day is a first knockout win in the top tier competition. It was a distinctly Quinsy performance last night. Moments of excellence outnumbering the moments of cluelessness this week. Overall I think their performance was deserved.

What was pleasing after last week was the way we executed so many solid defensive sets, some of which when down to 14 and the pressure was on. Smith was excellent, Andre too and Wev everywhere as usual. Riley has to start ahead of Wacker for me from now on. The dodgy darts contributed to leaving a few points out there.

If we’re going to get thumped in the quarters I’d far rather it be by Bordeaux so good luck to them this afternoon.

Glad I wasn’t subjected to Ryan Wilson on the TV. Wasn’t he the ‘card’ that started on George Ford in the tunnel in a Calcutta Cup game a few years back?

Hammond is the better player, but he’s always going to lose out to Stephan in a straight shoot out probably just by his position as club captain. I’d drop Steohan altogether but can’t see it happening
are you sure? I think if it's a shoot-out at lock then Hammond gets the nod. He's good for 15 tackles a game, the guy I'd a machine. At the moment it looks to me like Stephan is filling gaps.

Just back to our hotel after the match, and thought it was an excellent game. Two teams playing pretty well and could have gone either way at the end. Ref didn’t have his best day but felt his decisions evened out. Main grumble would be Quins’ inconsistent lineout, but just happy to get a first ever knockout win!

Unless Dino is expected back anytime soon, then its Launchbury with either Hammond or Lewies.

Don't think its been mentioned so far, but I thought our maul defence improved markedly once Launchbury came on. On the whole, we did a pretty good job of spoiling their driving maul game given its such a weapon (commentators were saying Glasgow have the most driving maul tries of any team this season across the Prem, URC or Top14).

Hammond takes a lot of ball and makes a huge number of tackles. I don't see how this isn't making the lineout even worse.

Herbst starting is always a concern so that's my biggest problem. Good to see Lawday back, that really helps.

Great to snatch the win. Whether its Sarries or Bordeaux, we're underdogs in the quarter final. Difficult to see us playing in patches and getting a result against opposition of that quality.

Lineout was shocking today, even more so when you consider we had three locks on the pitch and our two primary jumpers in Hammond and Lewies. We really miss Kenningham as a jumper.

On the plus side, defence was determined today.

Wow. Great defence again and Glasgow lose their nerve first and go for a big gamble with time up, ball goes out, Quins win a nailbiter!

For all the talk of Quins collapsing, this was a win based on defensive nerve in the second half. Three huge defensive sets when Glasgow had tons of momentum won us that game. No crumbling by quins this time.

Would've been easier without the mistakes but gosh, I'll take any kind of win. Well done boys!

Yeah, could see how another ref would have given us a penalty try for the sacked maul and there was never separation for Murley (though how it was reffed is how I think it should be!), but we had some pretty impactful decisions go our way as well. French refs always add a layer of chaos.

Need to up the intensity to prevent a Bath style comebback. Glasgow aare a good side. Ref very French but consistant, they will throw everything at us now, we should take every kickable pen, and look for drops, no bonus points, this in K.O. rugby. Calm, intense defence, take every point.

Ref is very slow to award jackals.

I thought the decision to disallow the Murley try was harsh but probably balanced out by the Fagerson knock-on which wasn't and the Steyn late tackle call which was borderline.

Bring on Riley!!

I can understand why they want him at 13 as a future option, but he just isn't anywhere near yet for me.

Quins lose another lineout... Probably justice for a fairly dodgy call against Glasgow

Tuipolotu yellowed after Glasgow push their luck once too often.

Oscar Beard really is doing nothing to convince me he should ever be ahead of Joseph and Northmore. Offering little in attack and missing tackles in defence.

Marcus does it all himself after the 9 broke off early to cover him and came too far

Marcus pulling the strings thankfully.

As for Beard, I don’t think he’s ever looked a solid choice at 13. Wing he seems more comfortable. I think he needs to revert back to the wing and stay there as otherwise he is in danger of neither being excellent at either position

If we could put a clamp on Collier’s car at the end of the season so he can’t go anywhere might be a good shout.

Baffling call to claim Fagerson knocked on there. Hope we can make the most of the scrum.

Some, uh, interesting calls in traditional style by a French ref. Particularly enjoyed the guy lying flat on the floor grabbing the ball twice

He’s memorised the law book just before kick off, seems determined to use them all tonight. Let’s hope he’s consistent.

And now Irne coughs the ball up and puts Glasgow ahead by 3 points as a result from the play.

This bloke is surely a parody of a player

Great worked Andre try. Always reassuring that some of the best performers of late (Andre/Collier) are the ones off..going to miss them massively

Murley's try disallowed because of separation. But it looked like he'd reconnected before the ball hit the ground?

Walker seems to be one of those players who coaches rate, but fans not so much. Maybe its because he's more of a nuts and bolts player with no flash stuff. Given the competition at hooker, getting into the World Cup squad was. no mean feat.

I've a lot of respect for Walker in that he's as brave as a lion, but for me Riley is the heir apparent. His handling and work in the loose is a level above and per MQ's comments, he doesn't look to be letting us down as set-piece time either. I did think at the start of the season, come the end, Riley would be first choice and reckon that'll be the case.

Walker had a good season last time around. He must have had a very strange world cup experience where it was clear that he was 3rd choice, and Jamie George frequently played 80 minutes which kind of implies that the management didn't trust him. It's not a bit shock that he's taken his time to find his feet again.

Jibulu has been given first team experience perforce because of injuries to the other hookers, but he is still a baby in front row terms and I suspect like Baxter the club will work on his physical maturity and injury prevention conditioning before letting him fully loose.

Walker is known in the club for offering a lot around the park in both carrying and leadership, which is probably why he is preferred as a starter over Riley. He's also had injuries this season and so may be struggling for consistency - but the club will need him for the run in so giving him gametime is important.

I haven't really noticed our scrum being massively strengthened starting Walker over Riley. I certainly wouldn't say Riley starting weakens us set piece wise, and he has better darts and does more in the loose in my view.  Jibulu is a beast and is the ideal sub hooker for late game surges

Maybe. I think sam has a really good partnership with fin too tho.

It certainly looks like this is the moment that baxter takes over as first choice. I would love to see Riley do the same. Maybe the coaches think the two together is giving up too much experience.

Convinced Walker must have some dirt on Billy to keep starting. He is third choice in my view, rarely having done much to justify keep starting, in front of Riley and Jibulu. Lets also hope Irne puts in the game of his life, as opposed to a few clumsy penalties.

Absolutely. Riley comes on and loops pinpoint throws with perfect timing to any man in the lineout, his throwing is just sublime. I don't get it with walker at all.

nothing against Max Green but we could do with Porter back.....also haven't seen much from Anderson to warrant being in the squad again but presume the injuries leave us short......

Porter is a big miss. Expecting DC to put in 80min performances week after week at this stage of his career is a big ask and Green and Gjaltema just aren't of the required standard.

Let's hope no more injuries in the backs or we're going to be in real bother.

Pack options from the bench are decent. Glad to see Lawday back involved.

Decent team. Suspect the bench split is largely influenced by the number of injured backs. Really need some back for the run in.

I was thinking that our injury list would make most of a half-decent starting XV if they were all fit...

Harlequins have named their matchday squad for Friday's Investec Champions Cup Round of 16 fixture against Glasgow Warriors at The Stoop (KO 20:00).

The starting XV features just two changes from the side that beat Bath 40-36 with Will Collier returning at tighthead prop and Irne Herbst starting at second-row.

In the engine room, Fin Baxter and Will Collier pack down alongside hooker Jack Walker. Irne Herbst and George Hammond form the second-row partnership, with Stephan Lewies and Will Evans on the flanks. Alex Dombrandt continues at number eight.

In the backs, Danny Care and Marcus Smith start in the halves, with Andre Esterhuizen and Oscar Beard in the centres. Cadan Murley and Louis Lynagh resume on the wings with Tyrone Green at fullback.

The Impact Players feature a 6-2 split, with replacement front-row Sam Riley, Joe Marler and Dillon Lewis joining the experienced Joe Launchbury, flanker Will Trenholm and the returning Tom Lawday. Elsewhere, Max Green covers scrum-half with Cameron Anderson adding versatility in the backs.

Director of Rugby Billy Millard commented: “We’re excited for Glasgow. Knockout rugby is always special and we’re looking forward to a good challenge on Friday night. The boys have worked hard to get to this stage and we’re determined to put in another good performance for our supporters.”

The winner of Friday's Round of 16 match will face either Bordeaux Begles or Saracens on the weekend of 12-14 April. Click here (https://www.quins.co.uk/article/potential-investec-champions-cup-quarter-final-plans) to read more information.
