3.16 When a front-row player leaves the playing area, whether through injury or temporary or permanent suspension, the referee enquires at that time whether the team can continue with contested scrums. If the referee is informed that the team will not be able to contest the scrum, then the referee orders uncontested scrums. If the player returns or another front-row player comes on, then contested scrums may resume.

3.17 In a squad of 23 players or at the discretion of the match organiser, a player whose departure has caused the referee to order uncontested scrums cannot be replaced.

No exceptions for head injuries being different to other injuries

One of the commentators mentioned it but didn’t seem terribly bothered that it hadn’t happened. They might not have been entirely sure of themselves because neither of the others seemed to pick up on it. It’s pretty bad if that is the case as we’d have been playing against 14 for most of the match.

I think slagging officials with personal slights is a little beneath well behaved adults.

Calling him thin skinned doesn't appear to be a particularly personal slight.

I have never seen a professional ref attempt to wind up an already yellow carded player as Carley did yesterday. He knew what he was doing approaching Danny and goading him into saying something else that would warrant a Red and let's face it Carley has previous with Quins. I think it was very unprofessional but not out of character with this thin skinned official.

My recollection was that Care was aggrieved by the pen against Wallace and told Carley what he thought of him. Carley called Care over to give him a yellow.

As Care was refusing to come over, Carley gave him the choice of card colour. Care came across to me as somewhat petulant.

Whether Care agreed with the penalty call or not, he should (IMO) respect the ref.

Compare with Barnes and Hartley or Dickson and Sinckler. Both times the players received bans for not dissimilar offences to Care’s.

I do find that Carley doesn’t have as good a relationship with the players as most of the other ref’s. Everything seems much more strained.

I think you’ve got it spot on.

DCshould never have said what ever he did to the referee, and when called out for it should have apologised and accepted his yellow. It was not good from him!

The players all know how pedantic Carley is and should be able to cope with it.
