I wonder if he is still a marquee player??  I know he was for his first deal.

If he is could be interesting to see if Quins plan another marquee signing

I agree, I just think we'll see bolstering elsewhere if there are to be more incomings. Think Gussy sees Symons/Lewies as being our most frequent first choice pairing with Young, Freeman, Lamb, South all fighting it out for bench and rotation spots. 6 locks is pretty standard depth if you look across the Prem I think - without having seen much of Freeman and Young I'm trying to reserve judgement on our depth in terms of quality there until I've seen them have a few hit outs. I too think we are still a little weak in this area. Nevertheless, I think Gussy is done in the second row.

If you look at numbers across the squad for next season we maybe need another squad player at LH prop with Lambo playing less and less, TH prop if big Josh goes and then I think we're fairly well covered (and this next bit is important...) in terms of numbers at least.

I'm personally just not convinced we have any real quality in our depth at FB. When Mike isn't available it's a massive step down in quality to Chisholm. Morris hasn't really strung enough games together yet so I'm happy to give him more of a chance but he seems to have the injury bug. Lang is not a FB at the moment - either we move him there and play him there frequently or I personally don't feel he's going to have the positional nous required. Reserving judgement on Herron but feels like a longshot to expect him to cement himself as Brownie's successor.

In most other positions we have an obvious deputy. At FB I don't feel like we do. Same can be said for fly half although we're going to have to see what Herron can do. See the following very subjective and by no means definitive breakdown and tell me where you see the weaknesses:

1. Marler (1st choice) / Botta (2nd choice)
2. Baldwin / Crumpton
3. Sinckler / Collier
4. Symons / Freeman or Lamb
5. Lewies / Young
6. Clifford / Lawday
7. Robshaw / Evans
8. Dombrandt / Chisholm

9. Care / Landajo
10. Smith / Herron?
11. Murley / Visser
12. Saili / Tapuai
13. Marchant / Campagnaro
14. Earle / Ibitoye
15. Brown / Chisholm

For me it's still 4/5, 10 and 15.

Good points and overview TBQ.

Campagnaro is an interesting one for me. He's an international centre and isn't guaranteed a start at 13. Marchant not being considered (bizarrely) by England so where does his game time come from and why did he sign?

Hope that doesn't means Marchant's off or if England have a clear out after Japan and Marchant is involved, we could be a bit light there.

Maybe that bench spot that saili has been occupying for the past few weeks. Would be perfect for us with the added bonus that we wouldn't have to reshuffle to backline if he came on as he can play wing and centre equally well.
Guess we'll see either taps of saili (assume the latter) out at the end of next season and campangaro was simply available now rather than then

The 2nd Marquee spot effectively needs to be a player coming in from overseas. With the exception of Saili I can't think who we have signed in the last few years might have dislodged Big Kev as our 2nd Marquee player - so quite likely that he still is. I hope we don't rush into replacing him - if it means not having a 2nd Marquee player next season but then getting it right the following summer I'd be ok with that.

I'd say Clifford and Chisholm (J) are relatively recent Academy graduates who could be classed as "of note" in the forwards...

Clifford's aged 26 - you're kind of making my point!

Not necessarily. We could have made one of our own domestic players a marquee - Care for instance or Marchant or Robshaw in order to remove them from the cap. The rule is it can't be a player you've signed from another Prem team so they would all qualify. You can rotate the marquee players every year too.

Its a shame our academy has been so average for the last several years.

I agree but the death of Seb Adeniran Olule and the loss of John Okafor and Jonas Mikalcius contribute to that.  All were more exciting prospects than some who have made it through to the main squad (in my opinion, obviously).

I don't think the 2nd player can promoted from within:

A Club shall only be entitled to nominate a Player as a second Excluded Player who:
(i) has not been a Player of any Club during the previous Salary Cap Year; or
(ii) was that Club’s second Excluded Player in the previous Salary Cap Year.

I tend to agree on Campagnaro. He’s a very good player, but not so good that I’d risk losing Marchant (who I’d regard as one of our best players) to give him game time.

I don’t think it’s bizarre that Marchant isn’t currently with England right now given the form of Henry Slade and Eddie’s preference for players who can cover multiple positions (Tuilagi, Nowell and Lozowski can/have all played 13 for England).

He’s been called up to training squads on a few occasions, so he’s clearly on the radar. I think he may have picked up a cap or two by now had he not picked up badly timed injuries.

What happened to Okafor?

That's a relief. It sounded like he'd had a bad injury or something. Shame though, he looked a useful player.

Saw something a few weeks back saying that 1 or 2 Prem teams are looking at him for next season.

Apparently Earle is having a reconstructive surgery next week after rupturing his acl. No timeframe until it's complete.   Alex Shaw on twitter
