Hooker swap
« on: Sunday 07-Oct-2018, 07:12* »
According to TRP we are trying to persuade Matevesi from Pirates who is a hooker to join us with immediate effect but they want Dave Ward back in exchange.

No brainer from me. No idea what Matavesi is like but, we want him.  Wards throwing is comical and cost us points yesterday (LO led to scrum, then pen).  As much as I have loved him at Quins , I must admit my heart sank a little when he came on as I knew what was coming.  Sentiment aside this must be a good move.  Should free up a bit more cap as well.

According to Oxford dictionary Swop is an official variant of swap. Probably more common in US which is why my iPad went for it. I can change it if it offends? I just need to find out how!

I’ve not seen Matavesi the hooker. Presumably he’s related to Josh and Joel?

Crumpton’s continued selection suggests to me that Gustard favours a hooker with good basics, so I’d assume that Matavesi is a similar style.

Ward has been a great servant but his lineout throwing has already cost us points this season.

Can only be a good thing for us, I groaned when I saw Dead Eye Dave on instead of Crumpton. There was a point a few seasons back when during a sustained run of games (injuries maybe) that he actually got quite reasonable at the line out but you can't do that for long and need to rotate players

Biography
A former Camborne, Plymouth Albion and Racing Metro (Paris) player, Sam signed for the Cornish Pirates from Redruth early in December 2017.

The Matavesi family is well-known in Cornwall. Sam’s dad Sereli Matavesi was the first Fijian to play for Camborne and Cornwall after his arrival in the 1980s, and his brothers Josh and Joel have also made their mark in the game.

Educated at the Camborne Science & International Academy, Sam then attended Truro College and was a member of the team that in 2009 won the Daily Mail RBS U18 Cup at Twickenham. He won the first of his three caps for Fiji in 2013 and was a County Championship winner with Cornwall in 2016.

Besides being a Cornish Pirates squad member, Sam is also a Supply Chain Logistician based at RNAS Culdrose’s W16 Stores Department. Indeed, he has not only played against the Army in the annual Babcock Trophy match contested at Twickenham but has represented the UK Armed Forces side and was also the Cossack Sword trophy award winner for 2018.

By the end of last season Sam had made 10 appearances for the Pirates, including being the ‘Tribute Player of the Month’ winner for both February and March.

Sounds promising. It's a shame Ward's line out throwing has not improved. The rest of his game is great. It would in some ways be a shame to let him go but on the other hand we really need a couple of good hookers

I would hope this guy is more the hooker equivalent of a Will Collier rather than a Kyle Sinckler.

I’m sure he was red carded against the Army last season.  Looked a good player though.

Swop? Or Swap?

Does it really matter?!! Can we stop correcting spelling and grammar. We all know what he meant.

His throwing can’t be any worse.
