I personally need to see a lot more from him to be convinced - I really just see him as squad filler at the moment. Our starting back row of Chisholm/Evans/Dombrandt is up there with the best in the league, but as soon as one of them is inevitably subbed off, I feel like the drop-off is considerable. I think I'm missing the days when we had a genuine impact back row option on the bench (Tom Guest). I've always thought of the 20 shirt (or 19 as it once was) as one of the most important bench shirts - if you have a proper impact player wearing it, you can flip a game on its head. I'm not sure that you could say that's what we have in Lawday on the basis of his performances for us so far...

I agree that the 20 shirt is important. And I also agree that fit and in form that's our best back row - but I don't think the drop-off is that big.

Lawday hasn't had much game time recently (I think through injury) but I remember him putting in some very good shifts when Chis was out long term. Likewise, when White had a run in the team he didn't look out of place, the odd bit of youthful overenthusiasm at the breakdown aside. And considering his inexperience, Kenningham has really impressed me - not just with how well he stepped up but with how he adapted his game and learned over the course of 80 minutes.

None of them quite offers what Guest or Clifford could at their peak, namely a genuine point of difference that could shift a game, but I've felt the absence of our main back rows less than I expected.

He's a decent player, but one of the best in the league seems a little overrated to me.

In Exeter he played 8 games in one season, 3 starting and 5 off the bench.

I’d like to see him get a run of games with us. He’s seems like he’s very much a Chis type back row player to me. I think he could offer a lot over the next couple of seasons
