Wales to Play Home Games at Twickenham
« on: Monday 13-Jul-2020, 08:45* »
The Wesh RU are close to agreement with the RFU to play 4 'home' games at Twickenham this Autumn.

Apparently, they can't get the spacing in Cardiff - d'you see?

Well, I didn't believe it either, but it's in the Telegraph so it must be true!

I believe the issue with the Principality Stadium is that it is in Wales, and is as such subject to the restrictions on public gatherings that the Welsh Assembly have put in place, rather than the Westminster ones that apply to Twickenham, and the WA is erring on the side of caution on lifting restrictions.

Two things:

1.  If that's true - do we really want crowds of 40,000 people (according to the Telegraph) gathering in SW London, with some travelling up from Wales?  I'm thinking of the Cheltenham Festival and the Liverpool vs Athletico Madrid match.

2.  I think I've seen somewhere else that it may be because part of the Millennium Stadium is being used as the 'Dragon's Heart Hospital' and the Welsh Assembly may want to keep it in place in case of a 2nd spike (though I might have my wires crossed on this).

But Twickenham Stadium is still being used for testing which has caused a big chunk of the car park being used for it. Is is also being used for other medical services as well?

I live in Cardiff and really surprised to hear this. The Welsh Assembly are reviewing things every few weeks so by the time these matches are played they may be able to go ahead in Cardiff. It seems ridiculous that 40,000 Welsh fans would be expected to travel to Twickenham for a home fixture when there is a stadium here which will probably be available when these matches are due to be played. If there was a second outbreak then the matches would have to be cancelled anyway presumably.

The article says that crowds are not expected to be allowed in Cardiff until 2021. Although I guess there will be some agreement between the RFU and WRU were that to change.

To be fair, both those events were pre-lockdown, pre-social distancing, pre-masking, pre-deep cleaning, pre-hand washing and probably a couple of others I've forgotten. If the RFU think they can deliver a safe way to watch rugby, then let them give it a shot. Otherwise when are we ever going to watch an International again?

I think this is where many people stand at the moment. Lets try it and see. Have all the safety precautions possible, plenty of signage, announcements and stewarding etc but as long as R remains below 1 and daily casualties are falling then lets be brave.
After all, its about damage limitation not damage elimination which is impossible.

I've no problem with Wales playing at Twickenham, a bit of manure on the pitch is good for the grass!

🤣

Perhaps we should fumigate them as they come over the bridge.

But will the residents like being fumigated?
