Bottled beers? I find them too fizzy generally. I prefer canned beers usually ie Abbots, OSH, HobGoblin.....
And they're cheaper.

Thing that's gets me about people tasting a beer, I don't think I have ever seen anyone turn around and say "Ohh no, I don't like that". Just buy a beer and drink it.
I have done this on many an occasion. Or even if I do like the taste, decided that I'm in a hoppy mood rather than a malty mood.

They do indeed have standard supply on taps, albeit they are more craft ales. Big Smoke is their own beer, brewed out of The Antelope in Surbiton. I quite like it. They also have plenty of bottled ales in the fridge.
I can count on the fingers of one hand how many bad pints I've had in there, so I always take a recommendation for a 'light, pale ale'. The staff are pretty knowledgable. I will say that this whole tasting thing gets on my wick. Especially on rugby days when they should dispense with it.
I knew we'd agree eventually. Normally I can happily taste a couple to find something right, rugby days - pick a pint and drink it. If you don't like it, buy something else for the 2nd one, and the 3rd, and 4th...etc.

Sadly the TFA link for a consistent 'running' beer won't come off. The Sussex certainly support TFA but they also own a brewery - 'Big Smoke' I think, so they are unlikely to grant TFA first dibs as a permanent fixture.

The problem I have with the Sussex is that you choose your beer from the vast selection from which they will happily give you a taster. You think, this is a fine pint I'll have another, and nearly every time you ask for another its gone. Then you spend the next half a pint getting over the taste difference only to find you can't get a second pint of that either. They don't seem to have a standard range of beer that is always available like maybe TwIckenham fine ales range which I know I like and they shouldn't run out of. They have a few lagers and ciders all the time which is ok if you want those things.
Perhaps you should use a Wetherspoons pub, they always have a good selection of well kept, reasonably priced beers. Food is excellent, too!

Try the Bloomsbury. Little bit further to walk, but easy through Andover Rd and Mereway to back of Stoop. You can get served. Just leave enough time if you want food. Can be 1 hour wait on International days, but good pub food and Pizzas that won't leave you hungry.

The whole point is how good the Sussex is.
All those things are reasons it’s good.
You do get some boring old fashioned crusty Camra bores in there - but mainly it’s younger and much more interesting.
Maybe if your post didn’t clearly appear to denigrate the pub, there wouldn’t have been any confusion.

My favourite pub is the Sussex, but do appreciate the 15% Quins membership discount in the Blucher, especially because you don't need to buy food. Also the Bloomsbury shows the rugby and gets a great atmosphere.

What an amusing pile of horse dung this review of the Sussex is. It is comfortably the best pub in Twickenham for ale and cider as well as not being massively overpriced like the Albert and Blucher. Used to be hard to get served as it was so busy, but they’ve sorted that with a small outside bar. Not sure what the problem with the vinyl is, but it’s an eclectic selection.
As SiB says, the Prince of Wales is another excellent option. More roomy as it’s a short walk out of town, but AJ’s Kitchen has the best food around. Also up that way and worth a visit is The Rifleman on Fourth Cross Road. Good beer and the rugby will take precedence over football (they send football viewers round the corner to the PoW).

Also - the Webb Ellis will be absolutely rammed from front to back and has bouncers outside. You will need shoplifted clothing from JD Sports and a knife to get in as well.

Went to the Prince Albert after last weeks game room inside and out with big screens showing the rugby
And if you want to walk a little further the Prince of Wales should have it on big screen and will have a bit of room for a larger group

Didn’t know the names - but absolutely happy to admit I made an bottom of myself on that. Pub was still utterly terrible.
But when does a pubs name denote how relevant it is to an area?
Maybe the Kings Arms should only be used by royalty or the Nags head only by horses.
Webb Ellis = relevant name but only since the invention of rugby so how does that work?. Twickenham has been here a lot longer than rugby.
S&M = relevant name (didn’t know) but wouldn’t have been before 1906. Pub there since 1715 so was it not relevant before?
Blucher = was a massive hero to the British at the time the pub was named, so I’m not sure how it fits your criteria since rugby didn’t exist for 100 years. But not relevant to rugby no.
Likewise Sussex, White Swan, Fox
So are they less relevant because they aren’t called after rugby? They were all there before anyone invented rugby and way before it came to Twickenham.

Mate, the pub has been there since 1815.
Rugby School football didn't start to be played even in Rugby School alone until the mid 1820s.
The first rugby at Twickenham was 1909.
Not sure you can claim things aren't local if they're not named after something that wasn't associated with the area until 100 years after they were built.
And anyway the poster said it had "more of a link" to the local area. Not "to do with". Pretty sure being a local pub in a local area for more than 200 years gives you pretty good links.

Yes I take the point on where the names come from, hadn't realised - the pub however was terrible, soulless and depressing and existed solely to host parties of people going to England internationals -- it was otherwise totally empty. A shame, because there's been a pub there since the 1700s.
Think Simon Shaw behind the equally unappealing M Bar that's opened opposite Twickenham station.
The Blucher, yes, is named after the Prussian general who helped Wellington win the Battle of Waterloo. I believe it's the only pub in the UK with the name. But either way it's been there since 1815 and has always been called that. So actually it's got more of a "link to the local area" than rugby, HQ, the Stoop or Mr Webb Ellis.
Oh and The Sussex has been called The Sussex since 1837.

The Blucher opened in 1815 - Prince Blucher was a pretty big deal around about that year. Probably more so than Webb Ellis. He was only 9 years old at the time and may not even have started at Rugby School.

If you go to the Sussex - avoid the Gin - it can give you a hangover.
We went there after visiting the Webb Ellis, Three Kings and Taste of Raj after having a few beers before, during and after the Eng v SA match and we didn't feel too chipper on the Sunday.
But, I agree with BQ - stick to the Green. Far less crowded on match days. Good options too - Prince of Albert/Wales/Sussex and Blucher all within walking and 3 curry houses in between.

Blucher has screens and may not be as rammed as normal post Japan coz assume lots of the crowd won't be England regulars. The Albert will definitely be showing it because the boss is Irish. Don't know about in town coz usually stick up my end (as it were) to avoid the crowds.
The bouncers at The Sussex won't let you in unless you have string-back driving gloves and a tweed jacket. (paging Mr Blucher quin)
