What are we expecting in the Bath game?
« on: »
I guess there will be two schools of thought.

One, that a wounded animal is a dangerous animal, and that last weekend will have been a wakeup call to the Bath squad. They are individually good players, for the most part, with some being exceptional (e.g. Sam Underhill), so they will presumably click at some point and, the shame of Sarries may well spur them on to exceptional things this week.

The other school of thought will be that they are so disorganised and demoralised that if they concede a couple of scores early, heads will go down, memories will come flooding back, and it could be a bloodbath for them once again.

I'm sure that Tabai and the coaches will have prepped the Quins team very well based the first of those scenarios, but should we worry that we may still come into the game overconfident after the successes of our first three matches and Bath's appalling record so far this season?

My personal worry would be that Sale outmuscled us last week up front, and, that when a team can manage that for the whole 80 minutes we look distinctly vulnerable. Can Bath do that?

Meh. If we can't take 5 points from this game we may as well give up. Bath are there for the taking.

Well, thanks so much for that considered response.

I still dont think we were out muscled last week.  Seen it mentioned a few times.  I thought we gave as good as we got.  Sloppy mistakes and careless play cost us.  Yes they missed kicks, but we butchered some god chances early on.

This week, id be looking to come out all guns blazing and put them under pressure early

Yh I agree with honkytonk, come out flying and put them under pressure. Get some early tries and watch their heads drop.

Both teams want to immediately bounce back from a defeat but Bath haven't actually won yet and will be desperate to get a first win and put last week's embarrassing defeat behind them.

I don't think we will, but I just don't want us to get over confident and let Bath into the game.

Luke Pearce is the ref I can’t remember if that is good or bad?

Baths best performance of the season so far

According to the stats:

We are on a 10 game winning streak at home (longest in our Premiership History)
Bath have never lost their first 5 opening games before (they are on a 4 game losing streak)

So something has to give...

Should be very good. Not only is he ranked as one of the top referees in the world, he makes players speed the game up. That will suit us greatly.

I slightly worry about our defence of the rolling maul but hopefully we've been working on it this weekk.

Agreed.

With the exception of our second half against Bristol, I think it’s fair to say we’ve been below our best so far this season.

As woeful as Bath were last week, there are enough good players in that squad to hurt us if we’re not on our game. Their pack/lineout is pretty decent so we need to be disciplined and make sure we don’t give them field position for their maul.

OTOH, I’d say this a case of best attack in the league vs. worst defence. If we can score early, I think there’s every chance we run up a handsome score.

For what it’s worth, I finally got round to watching the Bristol game this week.

One of the comments (I think for Healey) was that the teams who can most stop Quins imposing their game plan are those who have big bruising packs. He particularly highlighted Sarries and Bath.

That said, I’m now watching Sunday’s game from the Rec and Bath’s big runners look very ineffective. They seem to only use one-up runners.

I fear this match may be the last straw for Hooper.

It’s always good to have a ref.

Like the OP, I am in two minds. Hopefully the players leave the quandaries to us and just focus on their own game. (Clichés are still true!)

I hope we play a full strength team and really go for it from the off. With the England and Scotland boys being off before the Sarries game (I am pretty sure), this is our last game for a while with a full squad (less Wilco and injuries). I really hope we go out and smash it and throw it around on what I think will be a dry day. If we can avoid the penalty count creeping up (as was the case last week) then I think we can maintain playing on the front foot throughout the majority of the game. Scrum dominance and discipline at the breakdown will be very important.

I can see both teams trading scores early on, with us pulling away in the second half. One thing about the current Quins attitude and approach is that we never give up and are always fighting in games.

It's going to be fun! Come on you Quins!!!

This to an absolute tee.
Watching the Sale game back it looked very much like we concentrated on dealing with them rather than getting our heads up and playing the way we have been since Spring.
We need to get out there and get straight in to the groove, not falling behind before that happens, and not getting bogged down in their game, or dealing with their game.
I think this is probably the most interesting match yet this season........ as CarbonM said "Something has to give this week"
